Troubleshooting: Cannot print to Shared Printer (Vista)
I setup two Vista Business machines with SteadyState. Got the accounts all setup to do exactly what we wanted to allow -- Internet Explorer access for one specific website and to be able to print a configuration out. Both PCs are setup exactly the same, EXCEPT the main PC has the printer connected to it via USB cable. You can print the config page from I.E. under the restricted account on the PC the printer is connected to. On the 2nd PC, we have the printer installed off the main PC (i.e. \\PC1\HPColor LaserJet 3500). You can print to this printer as the Administrator. In fact, you can print to the printer under the restricted account when you "Run as Administrator" and do a Test Page (obviously because you're running as Administrator). This printer is also installed/shared the same way on another PC in the office and it can print no problem, so problem seems to definitely be with the restricted user account on the 2nd PC. I've even tried "No Restriction" for the "General Restrictions" area and still kept most (or all) of the boxes checked in the "Start Menu Restrictions" area, and still won't print. Anywhere in particular I can start looking? P.S. I did notice that sometimes in order for the PC to keep the settings I truely wanted, I had to un-install SteadyState, delete the user account, re-create it, set all the settings exactly as I wanted... THEN re-installed SteadyState and started locking down everything. I'll keep playing with it in the mean time and if I find out any more useful information in terms of what kind of settings I've tried, I'll re-post. THANKS!

Hi, I recommend you first disable all the restrictions on the restricted user and check if the issue is caused by Windows SteadyState. You can also use different restriction level to troubleshoot the issue.

I'm having the same issue, if I'm understanding the setup correctly. Ithink itmust be related to SteadyState on the hosting machine, because in other locations I have no trouble with SteadyState clients connecting to the exact same USB printer shared from a non-SteadyState machine. Removing restrictions doesn't help. Blitzpc, did you findout anything more??

Do your User accounts have passwords? I find that on XP and Vista machines, it is important to make sure all accounts have passwords. It may even help to ensure that each PC's User acount's passwords are the same. Also, see if the "Do not allow users to add or remove printers" check is at fault, that may have something to do with it. I would disable all restrictions, and I mean all restrictions, and see if you can print. If you can't then I'm thinking it's a Windows permissions error. If you can print fine, then it's most likely something with SS. Try playing with some of the restrictions to locate which one may be keeping you from printing. This may be also obvious, but make sure you unchecked the setting to Print in Internet Explorer? I'm curious now...Hrmmm......Philip

I found a solution to this back in December, meant to post it here, forgot, and have paid the price because I ran into the same problem after a re-imaging and could not find the solution. I'm sure this is NOT the same solution I found, but Philip is absolutely right. We do have blank passwords on these machines (necessary for the library setup) and apparently SteadyState must change the registry keyHKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\limitblankpassworduseto 1. I changed it back to 0 and all seems ok so far. Maybe I can get out of here before midnight. :*)Hilary

I was having this same problem with Xp and Vista this fix worked perfectly every time. I used your suggestion but narrowed the problem down to this setting. Hey, different subject but have you heard of any updates on Steady state for Windows 7. I dislike the alternatives to this program. Global Computer settings>Set computer restrictions>uncheck do not allow user names or passwords used to log on to Windows Live ID or the DOMAIN.
