Two instances of SSRS in a web server
I want to set up two instances of SSRS in a single web server. The reason is that one instance of it will be used by the external user (internet) and I will set up the web server security that user requires to enter the user name and password to log in. However the second instance will be used by the internal users (intranet) and the security will be set up using their Windows logon (no user name and password is required). I will alo set up the Internal instance the way that will not allow to be connected externally by disabling certain port/protcol. Both instances will point to the same SSRS database. I will also set up the objects inside the report manager so that external users may not see some folder/reports. Can it be done? Thanks Paul Mak

That's an interesting question. I think the answer is 'yes' but I've never seen it done. You can certainly have multiple instances of SSRS on a server. Like the rest of the services for SQL Server, you can have one default and as many named instances as you like. Each can have a uniquely-named web folder name and can communicate on different port numbers. As far as sharing the same report server database, I don't know if the SSRS service has safegaurds to prevent this but in theory, it should work. If not, you could easily create a replication mechanism to synchronize two databases - perhaps by using log shipping. It should be pretty easy to try it and find out. I'll be interested to see what you discover.Paul Turley, MVP, www.SQLServerBIBlog.com *Please vote if helpful*
