USB Controller crash on Intel Mobile 6 chipset

Sometimes none of my USB devices work. In device manager among the USB Controllers there are 2 controllers.

Intel(R) Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1C2D

Intel(R) Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1C26

When the devices don't work there's a yellow triangle for at least 1 of the 2. It seems to happen pretty randomly, and it's also random which one it is.

It's not like it suddenly crashes or something, if it works it stays working until after a reboot. After a boot it's hit or miss if it works or not.

Disabling and enabling the device again usually fixes it but sometimes you have to try a couple of times.

Under windows cp and rp the sound used to hang/stutter for a second  when connecting a new device when the controller was down, which lets me think it's chipset related.

The issue is there at least since consumer preview, although it might have been there earlier (I don't remember).

My specs:

Core i5 2410M

I think a HM65 chipset.

Laptop model is Asus k73sv.


I've heard that others with a HM65 don't have the problem, however someone with a k93sv model notebook also has the same problem. I guess it's something particular to this asus line? Maybe something with the mainboard...

Hi,

Have you tried the Chipset for Windows 7 from ASUS website? Meanwhile, please also update the BIOS as well as Chipset.

Also, you can test the issue in Safe Mode, update the device driver in Device Manager.

I must say it happens less frequent now with the RTM than with earlier versions. It only happened once actually.

But I am running the latest chipset driver from intel, althouth I don't think it's a driver really but neither is the one on asus's website. Bios is also the latest.

Which driver from Intel are you using? For now you can only use the Windows drivers since Intel didn't release chipset drivers for Windows 8 RTM.

Which driver from Intel are you using? For now you can only use the Windows drivers since Intel didn't release chipset drivers for Windows 8 RTM.

9.3.0.1019. It's for windows 7. Maybe you're right and I should just wait for an 8 version...

Intel says on the download page that it disn't a real driver though. It's only an inf file that gets updated, and there are no .sys files in the package.

The readme says:

The Intel(R) Chipset Device Software installs Windows*
INF files to the target system. These files outline to
the operating system how to configure the Intel(R) chipset
components in order to ensure that the following features
function properly:

            - Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
            - PCIe Support

              the Device Manager

USB is indeed in the list.

Hi Stannieman,

Try the Intel Driver Update Utility.

That may help. Check the driver versions in device manager before running the update. Then you will be able to determine if any changes were made.

I can see the K73SV does not have USB 3.0.

Anyway that does not keep from using USB 3.0 - i.e. hubs, harddisks.

Are you using any of that stuff?

If so, the USB 3.0 hub may need a firmware update - and likewise some of the HD's may be unreliable.

Just popping the question out of curiosity. Win8 RTM comes with native USB3 support - however you only run USB 2.0. It would be interesting if you got the yeally bangs when connecting a USB 3.0 device to a USB 2.0 port?

 I put stuff in 2 threads around this forum - in part about updating the USB 3.0 Fresco Logic drivers to prevent the yellow bangs - and for Renesas USB 3.0 controller about updating both its firmware and its drivers.

From what i've learned you have something that when connected, registered and installed with the usb ports triggers the yellow bangs (all though as you wrote - those yellow only occurs after resume from sleep, reboot and so on). One could go into details about device capabilities and so when registering with USB - however using compatible drivers for your connected usb devices is that simple working solution.

Anyway I've seen this happen in the situation with USB 3.0 I've described above. Anoying USB 3.0 stuff you can buy is not ready or getting patched automatically. Those 2 controllers was installed internally though extending the local system to USB 3.0 and had to be updated. BUT the problem with yellow bangs only triggered when USB devices was connected. It seemed to take down the whole USB subsystem or USB host - i.e the yellow bangs on the Intel USB enhanced host controller.

I only have USB 2.0 ports in my pc. It has nothing to do with the connected devices. The triangle is also there when no device is connected.

But when 1 of the 2 hosts has a triangle then none of the ports work, so the problem extends to the other one too.

It hasn't happened since I started this thread though, maybe it was a 1 time issue...

Today one of the 2 controllers was down again. All usb devices connected were still working however, I noticed it when going to device manager for something else.

The "chipset drivers that are no drivers" shouldn't have anything to do with it as the driver for the controllers is the default 6.2.9200 one dating form 2006.

Some custom asus board. The model is k73sv, same as the notebook itself.

That's why I think it's asus' fault.

I don't have the rec image anymore...

But my windows 7 installs were from a clean MSDN iso too and I never had problems. I used the exact same drivers for windows 8. Only for nvidia and intel graphics I used the windows 8 version, but the other manufacturers don't have an 8 version yet.

I'm having the same problem. Core i5 2410M, Intel Mobile Series 6 Chipset (probably HM65), and the exact same problem. Different computer, though. Toshiba Satellite P745-S4217. I performed a clean install of Windows 8 Pro using the image from my TechNet subscription. I have this problem every time I reboot my computer or after it goes to sleep. However, the only one that has the problem on my computer is USB Controller 1C26, which just so happens to be the user-facing USB ports. Thankfully, my USB 3 port uses a separate controller made by Renesas, but it's a pain that I have to keep my mouse plugged into the USB 3 port to use my computer, especially when I have a USB 3 flash drive. Disabling the device and enabling it again always clears the problem, but it's a pain in the rear. I've got all of the latest drivers from Toshiba for Windows 8 RTM, and I'm still having this problem. Ironically, the problem never occurred for me in the Technical Preview or the Release Preview. This just goes to show you, though, that the issue is not limited to your motherboard, computer, or brand. It's something with the drivers for the Intel Mobile Series 6 Chipset.

I'm having the same problem on a machine using an Intel Desktop board, model DQ67SW.  One or the other host controller will show that it could not start after a reboot.  Sometimes a cold reset will help, sometimes warm.  This was particularly troublesome when the controller that did not start was the one hosting the keyboard and mouse.   

When this occurs there is a System event log message from Kernel-PNP, Event 219, "The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000".

This did not happen once when the machine was running Windows Server 2008 R2.  I am running Hyper-V on Windows 8 Pro.  The same machine was also running Hyper-V under ws2008r2.  So far, as far as I can tell, I have not had both controllers fail to start in a single boot cycle.  I hope this is on someone's radar since it would be a nightmare for a regular PC user to diagnose.       

My Windows 8 Pro is a clean RTM install from MSDN, patched to current.

It's indeed always after a (re)boot. Once the controllers are running they stay running, but sometimes they don't start on boot.

It's also good to know it doesn't happen only on asus laptops, now the chance for a fix is probably greater.

The big update from this week doesn't solve anything either, but I guess it's intel that need to come with a driver fix.

Exact same issue with an ASUS K53SV: devices sometimes fail to start at boot time.

The chipset is an Intel Series 6 Express, model HM65.

Uninstalling and rescanning for devices also works as a workaround for me.

Last night, I managed to hide the symptoms on my machine by automating the device restart procedure when needed on boot time. It involves installing a small system service.

For me, it will keep my machine usable until Microsoft or Intel (or ASUS?) fix the drivers.

I disabled USB legacy mode in the bios and enabled UEFI. For me this works now. No problems anymore.

I think this suggestion solved the problem for me.  I disabled USB legacy mode yesterday and went through 6 reboots without the problem appearing again which is pretty much a record.

Any of you experiencing random system lockups?

You never know it may be related cause one time it locked up when re-enabling one of the controllers. Could be coincidence, could be the controllers cause the lockups...

Problem is not solved. 

But in opposite to previous solutions enabling USB legacy mode seems to fix it for me. Strange.

Same problem here on Asus N53SV laptop, strangely problem only started after re installing win 8.

Disabled legacy USB support seems to be working for 5+ restarts.

I'm going to send a report to Intel, as all but 2 of you seem to have the HM65 Express chipset.

The good thing is that someone HAS to fix it, either MS or Intel. This because thoshiba offers an official (by toshiba supported) Windows 8 upgrade for sjm78's P750. If even 1 customer buys the upgrade they have to fix it, and then it would be fixed for all of us.

Also interesting: the chipset inf update utility can't be downloaded anymore. I have the latest one for our chipset (9.3.0.1019 for Win7) and since then only desktop versions are available and the mobile ones disappeared from the site.

But still that's only and inf updater, the real driver used for all chipset components as shown in device manager still dates from 2006 (Vista era).

Does unlocking count as a login? Cause for me it sometimes happens when my pc comes out of hibernate, but I think the system is just locked then and not logged off as all programs are still open.

Same here. Dell Latitude E6520 . Windows 8 x64, suddenly stopped working. Tried the devcon fix, and latest intel drivers but doesn't fix the issue/wont install. Anybody any other ideas?

Setting the USB legacy mode to "Auto" seems to have fixed the problem for me.  5 reboots without a problem. Thanks

I am SO glad I found this post...I have the exact same problems...with an ASUS P8P67 LE. And I cannot find any drivers or help from their website. What was bad is I recently rebuilt my PC, just in the event something was corrupted and it made this fail and I forgot to reenable remote desktop (my only way to get in and fix my PC when this happens)...so the last time this happened, I couldn't get into my PC, even with a PS/2 keyboard or mouse. I went away on a two day trip, came back and it was working again, so I reenabled remote desktop. This morning, it happened again. So, going to try to see if any of these suggestions will work.

Same thing with ASUS N53SV. Tried updating the drivers, using the auto-update feature from Intel and it still comes up. I switched the Legacy USB to Disabled and so far it's worked. I'll let you know if that breaks again.

For all of you about them yellow bangs you get in device manager with the Intel drivers from may be installing Windows 8 incompatible USB 3.0 drivers from i.e. Fresco Logic on for instance a pr Ivy Asus system ...

As I wrote somewhere above - for any of you having a USB 3.0 system not based on native support from Intel (i.e. you have a pr Ivy based PC with 3rd party support for 1 or more USB 3.0 ports) - make sure you have compatible drivers. I.e. for the Fresco Logic FL-1000 chip used in some cases by i.e. ASUS.

I still use 3.5.42.0 release from Fresco Logic - it has worked for me with Windows 8 for half a year now - without yellow bangs in device manger - providing USB 3.0 connectivity (without falling back to USB 2.0 speed) - and that was the result of this test during pre-release: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-AU/w8itproinstall/thread/2f28c816-19e8-4f13-913f-fe98f588730e

Please write back if you find any updated drivers from Fresco Logic - that works btw. 3.5.42.0 worked well for me and still does. No yellow bangs. I did a custom Asus U36SD (because of the almost ultra thin profile + CPU + Price + SATA6 connector) which I opened and threw in an Intel SATAIII SSD 520 series. Nice piece of equipment for April 2012 - except for that Fresco Logic driver deal thing. But pr Ivy. My laptop burned - so could not wait a few weeks for Ivy at the time.

BTW I did a post a couple of months later informing again on this great issue with USB 3.0 in general http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itprohardware/thread/4242d987-3864-482a-a0bb-f58bd7d4ab8f

- but concerned with peripherals --- remember to update USB 3.0 firmware in chips if you really want USB 3.0 in some cases still. Especially if your USB 3.0 peripherals are from 2012 and before. I found firmware updates for most. They never did it before may be - because Windows did not have USB 3.0 support. Suddenly they all got busy making sure the USB 3.0 performance was actually there - and not just faillback to USB 2.0 (you would not notice that a USB 2.0 connector would you - but on a USB 3.0 expecting faster performance you would). For instance other USB 3.0 firmware found in i.e. many USB 3.0 hubs include Renesas - they put an update out too around june to update the software inside their electronics. Some HD cases with certain chips are also notorious for giving problems - however widespread because of Price (but fails to work correctly with USB 3.0 ... which sets you back to USB 2.0 ... i.e. USB 3.0 spec has automated fallback to USB 2.0 when device i.e. fails to do USB 3.0. Part of error handling ... so test your speeds with 2012 and previous USB 3.0 equipment ... but guess problem goes away now with USB 3.0 becoming mainstream for real)

Same issue on Asus P8 H61M LE Mobo( Bios 4401) on Windows 8 pro X64, sometimes one Usb port stopped Working Intel(R) Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1C2D" Un-installing and Re-installing device usually fix tat or i have to restart the system, and Sometimes My Mouse and Keyboard Doesn't work after boot(Cold Boot) No Cursor at Modern UI screen so i have to restart the system, now i disabled USB Legacy Mode in Bios So far Working good, I have latest Chipset driver installed, i saw this problem  on Windows 7 X64 too, i think this issue is affecting to those who have Asus Board or May be with Intel 6 Series users Who Knows, Asus intentionally dropped Windows 8 support for some Motherboards,  Asus Provided Windows 8 Compatible bios for Some Mobo's(Improve compatibility with Windows 8 OS.) It's Business trick to sell new Motherboards, i have emailed Asus they told me to install latest bios and chipset drivers tat's all.....:(

Could you please give a bit more detail on exactly how you code this in task scheduler? Option 1.

Option 2 leads me off course. as i have nether file "mpfilt.sys or mpfilter.sys" any where on any of my drives, and most certainly not located in my SysyWOW64 folder. I am also unable to locate any mention of it in regedit.

Sadly I'm unfamiliar with task scheduler. Since the days of XP I avoided it.  (But I'm a Fast Learner)

If I understand option 1 correctly, for me, it would look like this:

C:\devcon.exe restart "@PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1C2D&SUBSYS_844D1043&REV_05"

Side notes:

I'm using windows 8 Pro x64 with media center, on a desktop, that I built, IE: ASUS "P8H61-M LE CSM" Mother Board.  This issue never occurred in windows 7 ultimate x64. Only after I added the Media Center pack to windows 8 did this issue begin.

This issue is quite a bother because when it occurs It leave me with no mouse, keyboard or cursor to navigate past login. So it becomes quite a challenge. I am only able to over-come this using teamviewer7 to do an unattended remote login.

If you are having chipset problems, then it should be obvious that your machine is not going to be compatible with Windows 8.

One way to graunch the problem is to install the original OS and then install 8 on top of it as an upgrade. This will pick up old drivers and update ones that are known in the distribution.

I should probably make note for anyone else having this similar issues as mine. IE ( all usb hubs effected and no keyboard or mouse available as a result)

I set the trigger to be "system startup" and not "user login", that way each time the system boots I'll have usb support prior to login.

PS.. once your in, its a good idea to run NETPLWIZ and setup auto login. IE.. (win(key)+ R) then "netplwiz". Uncheck the box beside " Users must enter a username and password to use this computer".

PSS... it is important to remember that this is just a work-around and as soon as MS or Intel comes out with a driver update to replace the .INF update you should download it and apply it ASAP.

Its working very well now after a few more tweeks.

Note: leave off the ( @ ) symbol unless your Hardware ID has it in the strong-name.

and only include a single (") symbol at the beginning of the Hardware ID. after (C:/Devcon.exe)

IE... everything should look like this for windows 8 pro x64 .....:

here is a direct link to download "Universal Extractor v1.6.1" you will need this tool if you chose to use the 1st dl link for devcon.exe and extract it from the WDK yourself. ( "WinRar" and "7zip" will not extract this tool from the .MSI correctly.) you must use "Universal Extractor v1.6.1" or another extractor tool capable of extracting from .iso to .msi to.msi still in the correct .msi format ( this is why I gave the 2nd link. (direct link to downlaod the Pre-Extracted Windows 8 pro x64 compatible version of Devcon.exe)

No mater the method you chose for download devcon.exe (exaction method or not). You must place devcon.exe in your C:/ root directory...    IE.. open my computer and select "C:" drive. then past "devcon.exe" there. It can not be left in "downloads". (Optionally) I also suggest placing a copy of devcon.exe in "C:/Windows/System32" and in "C:/Windows/SysWOW64" . This way when you open an elevated command prompt (IE.. With Administrator Privileges) you will be able to type "devcon.exe help" this may aid in Troubleshooting if necessary.

Additional notes: You do not need to install or run devcon.exe after you extract or download it. (This will only open a CMD-prompt window for a second and then it will close again, this is because no command or syntax would have been associated with the command upon it being ran/clicked.)

Same issue on Asus P8 H61M LE Mobo( Bios 4401) on Windows 8 pro X64, sometimes one Usb port stopped Working Intel(R) Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1C2D" Un-installing and Re-installing device usually fix tat or i have to restart the system, and Sometimes My Mouse and Keyboard Doesn't work after boot(Cold Boot) No Cursor at Modern UI screen so i have to restart the system, now i disabled USB Legacy Mode in Bios So far Working good, I have latest Chipset driver installed, i saw this problem  on Windows 7 X64 too, i think this issue is affecting to those who have Asus Board or May be with Intel 6 Series users Who Knows, Asus intentionally dropped Windows 8 support for some Motherboards,  Asus Provided Windows 8 Compatible bios for Some Mobo's(Improve compatibility with Windows 8 OS.) It's Business trick to sell new Motherboards, i have emailed Asus they told me to install latest bios and chipset drivers tat's all.....:(

Hi XG2013 could you please give an update on the status of your issue described above.

If you are still dealing with the issue using ConditionOne's suggestion for a workaround will do the trick.

At-least until MS or Intel come out with a (non-INF) updated driver for the Intel 6 series Chipset.

I'm having what appears to be the same problem with a desktop pc based on an Asus motherboard with Intel H67 Express chipset (Asus V7-P8H67E barebone).
Randomly neither mouse nor keyboard (both USB) are functional after booting, rendering it really difficult to troubleshoot the problem. I've tried various workarounds/solutions I found on the web (disabling USB legacy support in BIOS, connecting a PS/2 mouse or keyboard) but none of them work. Sometimes if I leave the pc on for a while and then connect a second mouse to another USB port, that second mouse works, other times that workaround doesn't work either. One time when the second mouse workaround worked I discovered that in device manager one of the USB controllers as described above by the topic starter has an exclamation mark next to it, and in the properties window it is stated that Windows has stopped the device because it isn't working properly. Disabling and then reenabling the device seems to temporarily cure the problem. But of course I can only do that if I'm able to get into device manager. When neither keyboard nor mouse work I'm not even able to get into safe mode, probably because not even the F8 key works during bootup.
There's obviously a bug somewhere. From what I read above, the common elements are the Intel chipset and the Asus brand of motherboard...

Tried the same, but nothing changes. It's strange because it happens after a cold start (i.e. first time i turn on the pc in the morning) but if i shut down and turn it on after some hours of use, the problem does not appear.

its an easy temp fix

(side Note:) I believe this issue was related to ASUS ai suite II ... atlease in my case..

I dont have native USB3.0 and at an eralyer point i installed an asus update that helped my USB2.0 talk to 3.0 devices faster.

i removed all that crap and the drivers for that crap then reinstalled the correct chipset again re-flashed bios and re optimized settings. and because i like to be able to see my CPU temps from the OS i reinstalled the ASUS ai Suite II and just stayed away form any thing to do with USB3.0 and now i have disabled the scheduled task and just ran it normal ... Have not had an issue in 14 days and countless reboots and cold starts.

Oh and my Write speed to USB3.0 devices has increased!!!! .... from 34Mb/sec to 40+ Mb/sec    imagine THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and delete them.

Hi guys,

I've had the exact same problems. Running ASUS P67P8 motherboard with the P67 intel chipset, I am getting the same errors and have been using hours and hours trying to solve the problem with the USB hardware being disabled and "blocked from starting because it is known to have problems with Windows (Code 48)" .. 

Anyway, tried following some of the ideas and tips here; changing legacy USB settings in BIOS, trying the devcon trick etc etc, nothing worked. Totally frustrated and almost giving up thinking I'll buy a PCI card with USB ports on it tomorrow .. I did some more headless random hit-n-miss googling, and found an advice that went with installing ASUS AI Charger ..

I was like .. what? But gave it a go, installed it, restarted .. and low and behold, my USB mouse and webcam came right up.

It works fine in the beginning, then just quits. The device manager shows the keyboard and mouse connected to the USB ports, but after 15 to 20 minutes, they stop working, and the device manager can no longer see them.
The computer is a brand new laptop, acer V3, i5-3210M 8GB, Win8 64bit.

There are loads and loads of people encountering the same problem for the last several months, but I haven't found any solution, just complaints. I assume that this isn't a compatibility issue, cuz Win8 can see the devices in the beginning, and they work fine for a while. 

Considering the number of people with this problem, it really seems that there should be a solution already?

You have not specified any hardware information-a gazillion keyboards and mice out there and 20 or so versions of the Acer V3-so how can I help?

There are USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, most likely on the Acer. Read the User's Guide, identify and connect to the USB 2.0 ports with the keyboard and mouse.

Does the keyboard and mouse manufacturer provide Windows 8 drivers? The KB & M may not be Win 8 compatible.

Im on an Asus N73SV (Intel Core i7 2630QM 2GHz, Mobile Intel HM65 Express Chipset) and approximately every 20 start ups the Intel USB 2.0 drivers crashes. When I start the laptop they are already not working. Then I need to uninstall all Intel USB-controllers in Device Manager, restart and then it works fine. After something like 20 times rebooting the laptop I got it back.

HiJacked?? This is a common fault with a windows driver by the looks of it to me.
I use HP hardware, z210 workstations that all display this common fault with windows 8 - This is a supported OS by the manufacturer for this hardware. Seems we need a fix for a bad driver, or faulty firmware code.

HI ALL!!
I had placed a HP support request for My HP Z210 series workstations with this USB controller and went through the support process.

Tech came onsite, we discussed this issue, I showed him this post along with an HP forum and Intel forum post and he agreed that this is a driver issue. So, after a long discussion with his tech center, they advised that a hardware replacement was out of the question and that also, as the machines are supported for Windows 8 that they would get back to me.

So, it looks as if we have got somewhere. This won't be a quick fix, but I will advise as I know anything.

i have ASUS G74SX witn WIN8Pro and the same problems but I have new investigation solution.

I read in another forum that the problem occurs when you have installed Hyper-v on Win8.

Well for me this was the cause sure so I have solved simple unistalling hyper-v !!!

I didn't trie the bios solution to disable legacy usb.

Now I need hyper-v so I first disbale the legacy usb into my bios (I will go to find) and after I will install hyper-v and see what happen.

Did you have hyper-v installed ?

I've just received a call back from HP and they have advised that the "FIX" is to install Windows 7 and that they are closing my case. I feel sorry for the authorised service centre who had to relay this information as it is a real cop-out. Now, as for having Hyper-V enabled, I believe my DEVs with this issue will have it enabled and the ones who do not have it enabled are not experiencing the issue. I will do some more testing - But once I am back from holiday :)

I threw this installer on my hp dv7t-7300 QE with the Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family that's experiencing this same problem but it didn't appear to update anything and it specifically says it does NOT update USB so I don't think it's a viable solution although if anyone else finds otherwise I'd love to know.

So I have had this issue in Win8 since I installed it, and even more severly in the 8.1 preview (upgraded to 8.1 not clean install). I removed Hyper V and zero problems since.

This is using a Dell Vostro 260 Intel H61 chipset. USB Controller is reported as C200.

I have found with Hyper-V enabled to avoid the driver crash - SHUTDOWN - DO NOT RESTART.

A restart causes the a quick post as opposed to a full hardware initialization and the issue doesn't arise.

This is now less of a major bug and more of an annoyance.

After several months it happened once again last week. Seems the issue slowly went smaller to the point where it happens only a couple of times a year. This has indeed made it less of a major bug.

Small point to notice is that I never had hyper-v enabled.

Take a look at your USB3 controller - guess that is a Fresco Logic Controller?

If so, You should replace the CM_DEVCAP_REMOVABLE flag with the CM_DEVCAP_SURPRISEREMOVALOK for the device capabilities of the Fresco Logic device (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\VEN_1B73&DEV_1000&SUBSYS_10391043&REV_04\...\capabilities)

ASUS found it nessecary to do this. No more yellow bangs.

During any of the Win8 previews this also happened to make the controller work correctly.

If not, the Fresco Logic device will for some reason put down the Intel ... USB Enhanced Host Controller with yellow bangs.

I have exactly same issue on my Asus N73SM with Windows 8.1.

Windows 7 works fine with this chipset, but when I installed Windows 8.1, I have to go device manager and disable/enable Intel(R) 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller - 1C26 after each reboot

Same problem to me on Windows 8.1.

Curiously, the same machine I have another disk with the same Windows and the problem has not yet appeared.

The driver version is the same version of Windows (6.3.9600.16384). That explains why I have not found how to update it.

I went to intel and installed a updated version of my chipset drivers and i noticed windows 8.1 are STILL using their drivers rather than intels ones.

What i done to fix this problem:

1. Go to control panel

2. Find Device manager

3.Find the intel***usb controller 1c***

4. right click - update driver

5. click browse my computer for software

6.Let me pick from a list of drivers

7. select the intel version then click next.

Exact same issue with an ASUS K43e: devices sometimes fail to start at boot time.

The chipset is an Intel Series 6, Uninstalling and rescanning for devices also works as a workaround for me.

I disabled USB legacy mode in the bios and enabled UEFI. For me this works now. No problems anymore.

Hello,

Judging by the replies in this topic, most people have these issues on an Asus laptop of some kind. For me none of the mentioned options worked to fix this issue permanently. All fixes were temporary and the problem eventually returned.

I fixed this issue, in my case on an Asus K53SV laptop, by installing the correct drivers for the integrated Elan touchpad. It happened accidentally, because multi-touch gestures weren't working from the touchpad. I went looking for updated drivers, since Windows 8.1 installed the touchpad with (signed) proprietary drivers. In case of my K53SV there were several options available from the Asus site: http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=K53SV&os=30

The latest update (and don't pay attention to the version number!) was the correct driver. I then manually installed these drivers through Device Manager. I also installed the proper USB3.0 drivers from the same site, so it might be a combination of both. Ever since I haven't had any issues and all seems to be fine.

I hope this helps for anyone searching for a fix to this issue.

On my Dell E6520, after upgrade to Win 8 from Win 7, both USB drivers showed up with exclamation marks. Disabling / re-enabling the devices did not help. In my case, this was because of the installed "Asus AI Charger" driver. Uninstalling it resolved the issue.

Intermittent problems may still happen: I'll take a look at disabling legacy USB mode in BIOS for good measure.

This is ridiculous. Its April 2015 and i have STILL the same problem. Brand new Asus n550jk with SSD. At first it was fine, but for a month - The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000 and cannot login on cold boot. ALWAYS on cold boot. It always works when its second, third or whatever reboot in a row, but after a nignt I cannot log in. 

Also, will try disabling/enabling legacy USB mode in BIOS .... I hope that someone will SOLVE this problem, ASAP
