Are you trying to immediately start the service after a reboot? Did you again atempted to start the service manually after a while and receive that error? I set both my FIM Service and FIM Sync services "Autostart (Delayed start)". This allows the OS to boot up completely and let FIM services start in a more completely booted-up environment.

I've seen this happen when the SQL server was running low on disk space. Also, you might want to try verifying the FIM Service credentials are correct in the Log On tab.

found the user profile other than logged on user was throwing the error, in the event log. removed unwanted user profile and from registry also, then shutdown and then started the server and logged in, but no use, now in the event the other user profile SID replaced with current logged on user SID. yes i have kept the service "delayed start" as start up type Finally re-build the node from OS level, its fine and up

I'm getting this when adding the Password Registration and Reset components to the Portal. FIMService fails to start, even after backing out the install. The above profile event occurs at the same time the service times out. Presume nobody has a solution yet then. Using R2.Brendan

I had similar problem when upgrading from RTM version of FIM 2010 to 4.0.3617.2 in test environment. I found out that the machine, which was a vm did not have access to the Internet by default. I enabled proxy and also added this key to registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control ServicesPipeTimeout=DWORD: 60000 I don't know which it was but after I rebooted machine after enabling proxy and above registry key, I ran install again and it worked without any problems. I belive it is trying to go to the Internet for some reason and if it can't, has this issue.
