Upgrading to SCCM R3 from SMS 2003 SP3
Hi, I have been managing infrasturcture for my company. and have been running below mentioned configuration. One Primary Server with 27 Secondary servers. Complete environment is running SMS 2003 SP3 and planning to upgrade to SCCM R3, have below mentioned doubts. -Is there direct upgrade path available from SMS 2003 SP3 to SCCM R3. -Environment is running with Mixed mode due to one way trust between the domains, can we upgrade it to SCCM as it only supports Advanced Mode. -We are planning to upgrade the platform as our current server is not capable for handelling load, my question is should we for Migration or proper upgrade path like building SMS Server then on new platform then upgrade it to SCCM.

This is not a very easy task and can only be covered at a top level here in the forums. Yes, you can upgrade from SMS 2003 SP3 to ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 + R3. Mixed mode is not an issue; you don't have to implement native mode in ConfigMgr. Swapping hardware can also be done (see Backup & Recovery subforum). There are basically 2 ways to achieve the entire scenario: side by side or inplace upgrade.Torsten Meringer | http://www.mssccmfaq.de

On top of the answer from Torsten, you need to ask yourself if all objects (collections, packages etc) are needed in the new environment. Many companies that I know, have decided to do a side-by-side migration as it offers them the chance to move to new hardware and also do some housecleaning in the SMS environment. With CM2007 you will need a new Software Update process and OSD process anyway.Kent Agerlund | My blogs: http://blog.coretech.dk/author/kea/ and http://scug.dk/ | Twitter @Agerlund | Linkedin: /kentagerlund
