Upgrading to SharePoint 2010, Windows 2008 R2
hello - I am currently running SharePoint 2007 on Windows 2003 R2 64-bit. I have two options for the upgrade: 1) build new 2008 R2 server and migrate data over 2) upgrade Windows 2003 R2 to Windows 2008 R2. And then upgrade SharePoint 2007 to 2010 Which route would you recommend? Anyone have any issues doing an OS upgrade and then upgrading SharePoint? thanks

Personally, my recommendation (based on my experience and what I've heard and read from a lot of well-informed sources) would be to go with option 1. Option 2 is certainly possible, but whether or not it is feasible is my main concern. In-place upgrades in general (regardless of what platform we're talking about) are often challenging and definitely non-trivial, and option 2 is going to require you to attempt two of them in order to be successful. That's a lot of moving pieces and detailed steps that you're going to have to get right from the get go to pull it off. Option 1 provides you with a couple of benefits off the top of my head: Updated hardware. SharePoint 2010 is a needy, needy beast for both CPU and RAM. Newer hardware is going to give you more performance capacity and a longer amount of time that it will meet the growing (hopefully) needs of your SharePoint 2010 environment. Protection from migration errors. With option 2, if something goes wrong you've very likely hosed your current production SharePoint environment. But with option 1, if it doesn't work then you've still got your live SharePoint 2007 environment to turn back on while you assess the process, repave, and then try it again. Yes, it does come with more cost because you need to have two sets of hardware, but my overwhelming recommendation would be for option 1. If you didn't have to upgrade the OS, that's a point where I can see an in-place upgrade making sense. But otherwise I think there's just too much risk in the approach. Hi, Start everything from Scratch including planning and designing. AS you have to plan for the service appliaction too. Also migration of database gonna be bit pain but thats the good approach so that you can be able upgrade you sql backend too to 2008 r2. as you know Sp2010 with windows server 2008r2 with sql server 2008 r2 is working very well together.
