Wake-on-LAN (WOL) and Shutdown problems
Hi,Apologies if this is in the wrong forum but I'm hoping to address this to people involved in Software Management and Enterprise environments.I'm currently trying to implement a WOL solution for a customer and have some challenges. The problem I'm experiencing at the moment relates to the status of the machine after a shutdown. Providing a machine receives a controlled shutdown (soft shutdown) then the NIC remains ready and accepts the WOL packet. However, if the machine is shutdown by holding the power button the NIC is not available and any WOL solution fails. Why is power lost to the NIC? From the results I have this seems to be a typical customer behaviour and one we can educate but I was wondering if there are any techinical solutions.I have explored the BIOS settings relating to 'Power failure' which do not help with the forced shutdown but do work successfully when I recreate a power failure. To summarise, the problem I have is the effect on the NIC caused by the different shutdown. Why do different shutdowns effect the PC? Is there anything I can do or is this a problem I need to work around? Has anyone else experienced the same challanges?ThanksMatt

That's an issue of the different sleep states each computer can go into:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb693821.aspx"Hloding down the power button" is "a typical customer behaviour"? Don't they shut down their computer properly? What happens if you shutdown windows using the start menu?

Thanks for the response. If windows is used either from a logged on state or at a CTRL-ALT-DEL screen the NIC is available and WOL works successfully. The problem is only caused if the end user holds the power button to shut down the PC. During the pilot an example of this was found in a training suite. I assume all the users held the power button as a shortcut to switch the device off and leave, therefore WOL will not work without manual intervention which defeats the purpose. From the table you provided for Configuration Mgr this would be S5.I think it might be an educational exercise although I'm investigating POE (Power On Ethernet) on the switches.

Im having a similar problem with WOL except it stops working after a soft shutdown (through the start menu). If i allow it to power on and turn it off before windows start to load, WOL works. Only after i do a propper shutdown will it stop working. I have not tried to do a hard shutdown to see if it works. Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks

I am having the same issue. If I do a hard shutdown on a PC, it will not respond to WOL commands from SCCM. Anybody got any more info?
