Vegan,
See the following link for the requirements for SharePoint 2007. Note my comment here "--> To enable ASP.NET v2.0.50727"
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262485(office.12).aspx
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0
Before installing Office SharePoint Server 2007, you must install the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 and then ensure that ASP.NET 2.0 is enabled.
--> To enable ASP.NET v2.0.50727, open the Web service extension in the IIS snap-in on the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
If ASP.NET 2.0 is installed on the computer before IIS is enabled, you must enable ASP.NET 2.0 by running the command
aspnet_regiis -i.

I did all that, so I simply gave up as the manuals are incorrect.
I installed Server 2008 EE in a virtual machine and sharepoint installed fine with a fresh install suggesting there are some problems with Server 2003 R2 that I have not been able to figure out.

What are the server and office products? IE Service packs, 64bit/32bit and version of sharepoint? There are issues in 2003 r2 with IIS and ASP. What happens when you try and run the asp reg?Kris Wagner, MVP, MCITP, MCTS Twitter @sharepointkris Blog: http://www.sharepointkris.com/blog

Setting up Server 2003 R2 was a significant nuisance. Definitely not one I want to do again. Setting up Server 2008 was 10x faster easily.
Goal was a web server, up almost immediacy following install. No need to download and install webmatrix or something like that to instal IIS 7.5 etc.
Installing drivers and software on the VM was also a nuisance.
One thing about the VM, its quick and easy to start over if you make a mistake.

Vegan Fanatic: (what kind of a display name is that for an MVP?)
You have a clear choice.
Either remove from your sig personal adverts saying that you are available for work or stop posting to the SP forums.
If you continue to post to the pre-SP 2010 forums with an unchanged sig I will delete your posts. I - and the other Moderator involved in this thread - have already removed the offending lines from your sig often enough.
