Wim image downloads during Setup Windows and ConfigMgr
Can anyone tell me why during an OSD the wim file gets downloaded twice? It downloads it during the Apply Operating System phase and then again during the Setup Windows and ConfigMgr phase. It is a Win 7 image with the following task sequence: Install Operating System Restart in Windows PE Partition Disk Apply OS Apply Windows Settings Apply Network Settings Apply Device Drivers Setup Operating System Setup windows and Config Mgr Thanks, Ross

Is there a way to post a txt document. It won't let me post the log or even half the log? And I have no idea why it is downloading twice.

Although there is "download" phase during Windows 7 setup, it is not actually re-downloading the WIM from the DP. At most, it is copying it from a temp location, but I don't think it even does that.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

It takes just as long as the first download and if I reboot the machine before it finishes. And why would it need to copy the full wim from a temp location anyway?

It takes just as long as the first download and if I reboot the machine before it finishes, it still loads into Windows. And why would it need to copy the full wim from a temp location anyway?

I never noticed that after Setup Operating Phase there would be any downloading of .wim. Can you capture this step in smsts.log and paste only that lines here?

It seems to be happening during this chunk of the log....can't see anything dealing with the downloading of the wim. Just some errors with the installation of the configmgr client. ==============================[ OSDSetupWindows.exe ]=========================== OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) Command line: "OSDSetupWindows.exe" OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) The package NTC0007B is found locally in the cache D:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\NTC0007B OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) Entering ReleaseSource() for D:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\NTC0007B OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) reference count 1 for the source D:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\NTC0007B before releasing OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) Delete source directory D:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\NTC0007B OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) Released the resolved source D:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\NTC0007B OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) Command line for extension .EXE is "%1" %* OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) Set command line: "X:\sms\bin\x64\OSDSETUPHOOK.EXE" "/configure:D:\Windows\SYSTEM32" /version:6.1 OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) Executing command line: "X:\sms\bin\x64\OSDSETUPHOOK.EXE" "/configure:D:\Windows\SYSTEM32" /version:6.1 OSDSetupWindows 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1180 (0x049C) Configuring OSD setup hook OSDSetupHook 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1240 (0x04D8) Configuring setup hook OSDSetupHook 5/23/2011 8:40:50 AM 1240 (0x04D8) Resolving source for SMS client, package ID = NTC00037. I'm assuming we're talking about a build and capture TS? If so, then the Install OS task merely copies all of the source files down to the system. This will take a while as install.wim is 2.7GB (or thereabout) all by itself. Windows setup then must apply the wim to the drive. WIMs are just big "CAB" files so the process of extracting the 2.7GB just takes a while. Can you tell us exactly what you are seeing so that we're not missing what you're trying to convey? I think you may be falsely interpreting something and that is what is leading you to this conclusion.Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

The first download happens during the Apply Operating System phase. It lists it as Downloading Win7BaseVM.wim. After it downloads it applies the image and then applies the device drivers. It tries to download the ccmsetup.exe file and then starts the Downloading Win7BaseVM.wim...again! Here is some background and you can tell me if I'm doing it wrong or not. We create an image from a pre-setup master (includes Win 7 and all the programs and settings we need). I know at this point everyone is going to say, "that is not how you do it and that I should have the image come down and all the applications install afterward." I can't do that right now because we have very specific settings that need to be the same across the board and haven't had the time to see how to tweak them through the registry and file system. So we take our image and capture it as a wim in SCCM. Then I want to bring that wim back down through a task sequence and hopefully sysprep it in the task sequence. Thanks, Ross

hi Ross please take a look at this powerpoint presentation i did about Deploying Windows 7, it covers different types of task sequences and explains where it's best to do certain steps and why, look at the powerpoint notes.. it sounds like your task sequence is a Deploy task sequence cheers niall My step by step SCCM Guides I'm on Twitter > ncbrady

Whoa, you totally lost me above. Can you post maybe a screen capture of your TS and what the goal of your TS is?Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

Sorry I was afraid of that! Here is the TS. Basically captured an image and want to put that image on machines with the TS below. Thanks, Ross

Image didn't make it. You can use imageshack or another image sharing service. Jason | http://myitforum.com/cs2/blogs/jsandys | Twitter @JasonSandys

It was something really stupid. For some reason my ConfigMgr client package had its source directory set one directory too high, and the .wim was included in that directory. So it was downloading everything in that directory as part of the ConfigMgr package. I apologize for wasting everyone's time and thank everyone for the information provided. Thanks, Ross
