Windows 7 and XP updates

Dear All,

We have a working sccm installation. But I can't figure out why system updates are pushed to clients. I have deployed windows monthly updates and created packages for each of those. But still it is not being pushed to clients. Also I can see on clients that sccm configurtion client is in mixed mode and on the last tab of updates, it is not enabled. I believe there is no need that to be enabled.

Any ideas how I can troubleshoot ? Everything used to work but I just noticed that it is not happening any more and the updates which I updated a month ago still not pushed/installed on client machines.

Updates tab available in the properties of configuration manager applet (in control panel once client is installed) can we use to define update installation time as per user's need. If it is enabled updates can be install before deadline as per configured schedule.

To work software update deployment "Software Update Client Agent" must be enabled properly from SCCM Console. Please check the same. Once it is enabled same will be shown on the client system in configuration manager applet components tab.

To troubleshoot issue, first ensure that updates are properly downloaded & distributed on the distribution points. Also check the deployment properties to confirm it is targetted on the correct collection & deployment schedule & deadline is configured appropriately as well.

you may check updatedeployment.log on the client machine for more information about the error. Also check "States 1 - Enforcement states for a deployment" report. Accordingly you can decide further actions.

Thanks Prashant for your help. I checked that Software update client agent is installed and enabled. However I haven't define any deadline for updates to be installed. Is there a need for deadline to be set under software updates? What if I have new updates under the same packages and if the deadline has already been passed? Will it still install new updates which I will download and assign to packages?

Can I assign deadline manually now? I also tried to check States 1 - Enforcement states for a deployment" report but nothing comes up. A blank page opens with Sccm hearders.

Please advise.

if deadline is not set in software update deployment patches will not be installed automatically. In this case user needs to install updates manually. For this to work ensure that display notifications are allowed otherwise users will not notice updates available to them.

in deployment report you should get some counts. please ensure that deployment is targetted to correct collection & clients are approved in the SCCM Console.

you may also check policyagent.log & updatedeployment.log with corresponding deploymentid to find out that policy is applied on the clients.

Hi Prashant,

Thanks for guiding me. One more question is that when updates are superseded or no more valid and when I update with new updates will this still push the updates to clients? Though deadline has passed? Or do I need to edit deadline and make it say 2 weeks ahead?

Would you please guide me?

Thanks

superseded updates can be deployed on client systems. Expired updates can not be deployed & SCCM will give you warning about the same while creating new deployment only.
