Windows 7 update error 0x80070057

So I am having issues updating my Windows 7.

Whenever I try to manually update it gives me an error where it says

"Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running."

I tried to troubleshoot Windows update and it came with a few errors unfixed.

"Problems installing recent updates"

"windows update error 0x80070057"

What is the best way going about fixing this, I could not find solutions online that work for me

Have you run the Windows Update troubleshooter?

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

If it doesn't help, do the following steps.

Click Start and type regedit and press the Enter button.

Navigate to HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

Delete all values with this 0x80070057. Then run the the following fix it tool.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-us

Reboot the computer and verify that the problem has been resolved.

Hi,

Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates, Because The Service Is Not Running

https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2730071

Have you tried the suggestions in this KB above?

January 13th, 2014 4:46pm

Tried both suggestions with and without running safe mode:

Open-the-Windows-Update_troubleshooter found issues running is safe mode, but 0x80070057 was not fixed, and "problems installing recent updates also not fixed.  Also, "Corrupt files detected", but no indication what they were.  Rebooted and re-ran, again in safe mode, with the same result.

Moved on to .../kb/971058/en-us and ran Fix-It.  "Troubleshooting cannot continue because an error has occurred."  Ran the tool to diagnose the troubleshooting failure:  "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"

Yikes!

Problems started with "Scorpion Saver Services adware being detected and tried to get rid of it.  I don't know if the problems with updates were occurring before or after that.  During the process of trying to delete the adware malware, "Malwarebytes" discovered 13 malware issues.  I also installed Windows 7 SP1, but had to do it manually.

Still cannot update ...

Hi.. I'm having this problem as well. I ran the update troubleshooter and it did not fix my problem.

I ran regedit as you suggested, navigated to HKLM\SOFTWARE\POLICIES\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\.. BUT there was no \WINDOWSUPDATE inside for me to look into...

Now what do I do? I haven't been able to update .NET FRAMEWORK or install any security updates..

I'm at the point of reinstalling Windows again.. but thats a big pain.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have tried all the above fixes as well to no avail so far.  I also noticed scorpion saver services and tried to delete it which has now given me the 80070057 error and 8008005 error for windows update. Is there anything else that can be tried?

I am having the same problem.  There is no WINDOWSUPDATE in my registry files.
July 30th, 2014 6:41pm

80070057 - The parameter is incorrect Here are the primary ways to resolve this error:  If 80070057 or "Code 57" is returned when attempting to install .NET 3.5 Service Pack 1, install from the standalone package: http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/0/e/20e90413-712f-438c-988e- fdaa79a8ac3d/dotnetfx35.exe  If the Windows Update version of the package throws 80070057, so will the delta installer, but the full installer will usually work in these cases.

If error 80070057 is encountered while an update installation is attempting to modify a network-related setting or driver, launch Regedit and delete the binary value Config from HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network.

I'm having the exact same problem except there's no "HKLM"!

You don't have an HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry hive? (HKLM)

Alrighty, I am going to give ya the easiest way to fix this error code.  Ready?  :P

1. Close ALL programs.

2. Open up Internet Explorer.

3. Download...Silverlight from Microsoft.

**IF YOU already have it, then...uninstall it first, then restart your computer...then repeat steps 1-3 again.**

4. At the end of the install, it will offer you a check box to install updates from Windows...make sure that IS checked. Then...go ahead and check your Windows updates after it is FULLY DONE.

Poof!  There ya go.  No extra work, no fancy I.T. tricks, just... a nice and easy way to fix the problem.  I've had this problem a few times in my department and this is what I've found to be the fastest/easiest way to resolve the problem. :)

I've tried everything, even this. Didn't work. The installer no longer prompts to "install updates from Windows."

Hi

This could be a corrupt windows update folder.

I found this site: http://www.mycomputerdidwhat.blogspot.com/2014/12/fixed-windows-update-cannot-currently.html ,and it has a possible solution by renaming some files.

This also resolved the same issue on one of my machines. There is, however, a $42.00 cost to using this tool.

There should not be a cost to use the tool..

Hi, i've followed the steps you mention using the "Regedit". When i get to the windows file there is no "Windows Update" file inside it for me to access and delete the values with the error code. What does it mean?
July 23rd, 2015 8:26pm

Ciao, ho seguito la procedura di cui parli con il "Regedit". Quando ottengo al file Windows non c' alcun file "Windows Update" al suo interno per me accedi e cancellare i valori con il codice di errore. cosa significa?
vero, neanch'io!!

Did you all try running SURT from here?  If you are running windows 8/8.1 this won't work and will need to run "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" (without quotes) from an admin command prompt.

Can you let everyone know which process worked so if other people look at this they know what to try as a possible solution?
