accidentally installed SCOM-agent on a RMS
Hi,
my co-worker accidentally (Push script, don't ask:) installed SCOM-agent on our RMS-server (SCOM 2007 R2). First, I've tried just to remove the agent
manually w/remove programs. But the service itself "System Center Management" (or HealtService.exe) now points to "C:\Program Files (x86)System Center Operations Manager 2007\HealtService.exe" and it should be w/o "x86" since oprmgt is installed
there (AMD64). Any clue how to fix this? Can bring some logs as well, if needed.
eternally grateful for
any advice, guys. thanks!

Hi
From the information you provide, the RMS is in a failed condition and you won't be able to just "fix" it. You'll need to start a recovery procedure - the options are described here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc540370
Ideally, do you have a secondary management server you can promote to be a new RMS?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc540401
Alternatively, if you do not have the RMS encryption key, you can look to rebuild the RMS with the same name create a new key:

If in doubt, use up a Microsoft support call on this as they can walk you through it step by step.
Cheers

The operations Console starts fine, but the RMS is offline in the console, so it's in a failed condition indeed. I don't have the encryption key, but can I do securestoragebackup>backup now, or is it to late? I do have a secondary MS i can promote, if
that's the best way? - And then install the RMS as a new MS?
Thanks alot, Graham!

Hi
You can connect to the console because it is the SDK (Data Access) service that does that and I guess the SDK and Config service are running fine. It is the management service that is broken.
It is difficult to tell how bad things are on a forum which is why I tentatively suggested the MSFT route who would be able to take a look via Lync. Any wrong moves might make things worse rather than better and remote \ blind assistance via the forum is
more difficult for these types of issues.
The safest route (but probably not the quickest) would be to promote a secondary management server to be the new RMS as per the following document but for this process you would need the encryption key from the RMS (to restore to the secondary
MS) - you should still be able to back this up but if not, we'll need to consider an alternative:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc540401
If you can't backup the encryption key then option 2 here is the way forward:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946421
Good Luck
