Is it possible to give users contributory access to a sharepoint site but restrict them from adding items to the calendar and annoucements?

Yes it is possible to give an individual/group contribution access to the site and yet limit their ability to edit the calendar and announcement items. Reason: Calendar as its own permission list which when broken (edit permissions breaks the inheritance) can be edited to specify individual/group and their access level. Same stand true for calendar.
