document library SP2013: folder depth limitation

hi there,

short question. We need to limit folder depth in all the document libraries to 2 levels - that the users cannot create a very large foldertree in specific document libraries.

Means the max allowed path can be:

.../shareddocuments/folderlevel1/folderlevel2/"files"

any idea if this is possbile (by configuration I didn't suceed to find a solution - if anyone know a programmtical solution -  no problem)

thanks in advance for any tipp & trick

Hi

In document library whether you create a folder or upload a document everything is an item in the library so it goes with the item limitation

BUT as for as folder hierarchy is concerned as you know URL of a document contains the folder name in which it is uploaded, so when you are creating a folder it goes in the URL, and as you know there is limitation on URL size i guess 260 char, so you have to make sure when you are creating folders/sub folders/sub sub folders/ your URL should not exceed 260 char.

However you can use Document ID feature to access the document with shorter URL, it is a services in SharePoint you can avail this feature OOTB

thanks for your answer.

think that's all true what you answered. But what I want to reach is: every user of the document library can create folders. But there should be in maximum 2 folder levels at every document library. Means, every user can just create 2 levels of folderstructure in the given document library.

have you got an idea how to reach this?

thanks & regards.

Hi,

Actually you shouldn't encourage your users to use folders. Teach them to use tags and tag documents instead of creating folders. Using tags they will be able to sort or filter the library by author, date or subject. It will also make it easier to find information. The URL-limit as Mohammad mentioned, is 260 characters, and an single item shouldn't have a name that exceed 128 characters.

hi,

thanks for your answer.

That's what we prefer to do - without folders and just organised by Tags. In this case, the users should be allowed to use 2 folder-levels (don't ask why - was quite a long discusson and if possible the users should be able to use folders - with the convention to restrict the folder-creation down to 2 levels).

If there is a possibility to restrict it to 2 levels, that would be great.

regards.
