installing a sccm child server
Hi All,
I have one SCCM 2007 r3 server in a domain1 and planning to install a new sccm on the domain2. As we cannot just change the domain of an SCCM server or move the SCCM server to another domain the I'm
creating a new sccm server on domain2, that will become a child of the other and to
replicate the objects. I have configured a 2way trust between the domains to have the synchronization done and to be able to configure\make the new server a child of the existing
SCCM server. My question and looking for help in this forum is if anyone have some documentation to share with me for this type if implementation? How to configure this second sccm on another domain as a child and attach to the existing sccm parent server?
After all the synchronization is done between parent and child I will dismiss the sccm on domain1 so that the sccm on domain2 becomes the only sccm server. I'm looking for tips and how to implement this as I cannot find related and detailed information unfortunately.
My plan consist in:
extend the Active Drectory Schemacreate the System Management container on ADPublish Configuration Manager Site Information to Active Directory Domain ServicesInstall SQL server (same server as the new sccm)Build new SCCM Server (new site name and site code)Attach new SCCM site as a child site to the existing SCCM site - here are all my doubts of the best practice)Replicate objects (all packages, task sequences, collections, advertisements etc down to the new server)Break the relationship between the two and
Once the replication is done, promote the new server a parent server. This will upload all client data.Remove that boundary from the old SCCM siteAdd that boundary to the new SCCM siteReassign clients to new site (run a script/package to reassign the clients to the new site)Configure backup new sccm serverPrepare Distribution point servers in the new domain and synchronize with the new primary site server.
So if anyone can help on my doubts and particular the point 6 I will apreciatte.
Cheers
Pedro

The only thing I'd do dofferently is I'd reassign the clients before breaking the relationship between the two servers.
You are essentially doing a side-by-side migration. Just 2007 to 2007 instead of 2003 to 2007. You can use the docs for this.

thanks John, I'm aware of this...what I'm trying to find here the most important is if there is a step-by-step in how to configure a child server and how to attach to the existing sccm which will act as the primary parent until the migration is done? i know
the set parent tab, but is there enough? I know I need to install a fresh sccm and folow the steps I've named (plan) but actually my question here is how will I configure this new sccm in another domain to be a child from the existing sccm server? or in other
words how to configure the new sccm 2007 as child server?
thanks lot
Pedro

make sure the two servers are admins on one another and set the parent site and you should be good to go.

Hi John,
I have set up the new sccm server..so now I have one sccm domain1 and the second (new) sccm on domain2. Both have the same sps and versions installed. The only problem I'm having now is when I try in the new sccm to attach as a child (set parent Site ->
report to parent site) I cannot add or list the site on the old domain? Both sccm servers accounts are admin in both sccm servers. Do you know what could be the cause? How can I attach this second server to the primary site? There's any tip or configuration
I'm missing that this new server can see the other site so that I'm able to synchronize both site sccm servers configurations?
Thanks for any help

You'll need to specify the old domain in the DNS suffix search order on the new server.

I have the dns suffix search other previously configured on the new server. I added in the site settings -> Addresses - the site ID in both sccm configmgr servers as I expected that with this they could see each other. The site name in both site appears
as xxx - (unknow). I can ping from both domains so all seems to be working. But when I do a preinst.exe / syncchild xxx I get always the error:
C:\Users\apmonteiro>G:\SCCM\bin\i386\00000409\preinst.exe /syncchild 401
Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager v4.00 (Build 6487)

401 is not a known site.
Am I missing something?

Did you get the set parent Site -> report to parent site part working? Until that works none of the other things you are trying to do will work.

the only way I was able to set the parent site was adding the site address as a new standard sender address. Than going to the parent site I can see the site..but is set as unknow?? If I don't have the standard sender address pre-configured...I'm not able
to list any site (parent site) so that this server becomes the child. What i mean is in the drop list menu of the report parent site is empty??
So i tried to add manually the site in the sender address...and then I can see in the report parent the site listed...but is something like 401 (unknow)

The sender isn't adding the site as a parent/child relationship. We need to figure out why you aren't able to add the parent site in the set parent site box.

Hi John, I have figure out that I need to add the sccm server in the local group SMS_SitetoSiteConnection_(sitename) group and after that the site parent appears without the (unknow). How can I confirm that the server now is a child and right configured
so I know that the problem was missing to add the computer account to this group? Is there any tests you advice that I can see if now the configurations are working fine?
thanks
Pedro

Hi Torsten, thank you but the problem persist. After restarting the ssm services...I can't see the parent site. I though that adding the server account to the missing group's SMS_SitetoSiteConnection and
SMS_SiteSystemToSiteServerConnection would solve it but did not. I know I missing something but doesn't know what so i can set this new server as a child and synch both.
Any suggestions
Pedro

this is where the problem is. I can't set the parent site. On the old sccm server were I should configure the server as a parent the parent site is set to: none
On the new server when I try to add the report to parent site to the other sccm site server, the drop list is empty so I can't configure. If you see the history above that I talk to John you will see all I have done but still doesn't work and I can't configure
the new server a child for the parent server

Hi John and Torsten,
I have manage to set the parent..so now both servers (multiple domain) see each other. I have just this questions if you can help me out:
1. If I transfer the site settings from the parent to the child..what will e exported? Would it have any consequences within the site configurations as after all is copied I will broke the link from the child and parent? Or should I only transfer the collections
and packages individually to the child?
2. Is there a way to copy all account permissions to the child or do I need to create one by one in the child? As now within one collection I had export -> import, the collection on the child is with the lock. How to solve this?
3. Do you have a template script which I can use to update the clients to the new sccm site?
4. Last but not least, what's the best way to broke the link between the parent and child so that the child becomes the primary and only sccm site? Can you describe here for me please?
Thank you a lot for your support and help.
Pedro

I have successfully configured the parent and child which are both synchronized as I wrote later on but I dont know if you can help me out with the issue Im having when we have the child server active together
with the parent server we have issues. What happens is as I told you before we have a parent server and a child server in different domains. The clients are migrated to the new domain (where the child server is located):
The problem we face is the fact that we arent able to install a Build and Capture client via PXE. When connecting to the PXE Server WinPE is started, but the installation stops when contacting the SCCM environment
to retrieve the information about what to do (only when the child server is connected).
example in a smsts.log when successfully connecting to the SCCM server (only with the parent server connected) we're getting a list of 97 policy assignments. When the connecting is failing
(when the child server is on) only 20-30 policies are retrieved.
it looks like the policies are not downloaded correctly. Pxe boot works fine but unknown and known computers dont get the correct advertisement, then when the boot image is started and the winPE fase had begun the
OSD TS just reboots the client pc since theres nothing to do. (if we turn off the child all works perfectlyL)
As long as I turn off the child server, all works fine. But if the child is on, than we have those problems above mentioned
The client machine is correctly downloading policies from the sccm server, only not the correct one.
Also when software is assigned to an advanced client computer, the sccm client doesnt get the correct advertisement to install the software package.
it looks like the parent sccm server switches now and then between the databases for the 2 sites 400 (old domain) and 401(new domain). But would this cause this kind of issue? As Im aware within parent child settings does type
of issues should not happen.
What concerned me is that as long as I disconnect the child server and leave only the parent server active, all build and capture, download policies, software assignments and all works completely fine. Any suggestions of
what should I look? Configurations? What can I be missing here?
Thank you for all help and information. If needed I can provide logs (just need an email to do it:) )
Cheers
