I have created new Sharepoint site under SiteDiretory (e.g. creatednew site from site setting of this pagehttp://audc-spoint-01/sitedirectory/Pages/category.aspx) and added a userwith FULLCONTROLaccess, but user cannot save list as template, cannot save subsite as template, error "ACCESS DENIED" Please note that there is no problem for Sharepoint Site Collection Administrator at the top level WebAPP (e.g.http://audc-spoint-01/)

The user has FULL CONTROL over the new SharePoint site under SiteDirectory, but may not have enoughpermission to the "List Template Gallery" of the top level site. You need to make sure the user can add contents to http://audc-spoint-01/_catalogs/lt/Forms/AllItems.aspx. Try to give the user Contribute permission on the top level site, or at least Contribute permission on the List Template Gallery.

Sorry, looks like only "Contribute" role is not enough. Do this: Grant the user "Design" role on the List Template Gallery, the user should be able to "save list as template"; Grant the user "Design' role on the Site Template Gallery ( http://audc-spoint-01/_catalogs/wt/Forms/AllItems.aspx), the user should be able to "save site as template". Alternatively, grant the user "Design' role on the top level site,the user should be able to "save site as template" and "save list as template". You may want to have your top level site administrators/designers do this kind of task.

I have a user who can see the option to "Save site as template", can fill out the info for the template (file name, site name), but when he clicks OK he gets a message that he doesn't have the permission. I can't see where or what permissions he has to begin with that allows him to see this option. Do you know what permission is needed that would give a user the ability to see the save site as template option to begin with? I tested with a different user and gave him site ownership with full control, but he can't see the save template option.

This is interesting. I'm having a similar item. I'm working with a site where it's a MOSS 2007 site. A sub-site has been "imported" from a WSS 3.0 site. One workspace in particular the users can't save lists. These users are site owners of that workspace. And, thatgroup does have design rights to the site template gallery(http://sitename/_catalogs/wt/Forms/AllItems.aspx),at the root MOSS 2007 site. I'm scratching my head on this one. Been working on it for some time now.

Aha.... I figured it out. I had to go to:http://sitenames/_catalogs/lt/Forms/AllItems.aspxThen it worked.

Yeah, the way i found was to go to (as mentioned above) http://sitenames/_catalogs/lt/Forms/AllItems.aspx > Settings>Gallery Settings>Permissions for this Gallery> and set the appropriate permissions. Since we're a small company i allowed HomePage Members Design rights. Seems like contribute rights doesn't do the job

Just give full control access to the site template gallery of the parent site!

It looks like the user needs at least the "Manage Lists" permission on this list. I can restrict the delete permissions, but this is bit silly as we'd want users to clean-up the templates they no longer want. What I'm really after is a user list template gallery where they can only view, edit and delete their own items. Seems like a real limitation - I don't want to have to create a new site collection just for user's templates... thoughts?
