permission about a document item
I have a question about security for an item in a document library. I only want our staff to read it intead of all anonymous users. So I give Staff read access to the document item. What it is now : when staff not sign in, they cannot see the document
at all. They have to login to see it.
But is there a way to setup the staff can still see it is listed in the document library without login, then when they click it, it will prompt the login.
Thanks

you have created anonymous site so all users can view the site without logging in, so if on any Doc lib / Dic item you have applied permissions then for that specific doc lib users have to log in to the site.
Or
you can create a subsite only for your staff members , for that first create a sharepoint group on top level site and add all your staff members in that group.
after that at the time of sub iste creation select unique permission for site and add that sp group in site visitors section.

Obviously they have to sign in *in some way* for the system to recognize them in order to grant them access.
So I suspect that what you are really asking is if it is possible for them to automatically sign in - so they are unaware of having signed in (because they didn't have to enter anything) but the system knows they have signed in so it can give them access.
The way to do this - provided they have logged in to their computer using domain name\username is to change the IE security settings for the zone in which the SP site is to "automatic login using current name and password".
Then (provided they have been given access rights to the site via the username they use in the domain) they will access the site; be automatically be given specific access rights and will be able to access the document. SP 2010 "FAQ" (mainly useful links):

Thank you
Our current situation is most of contents can be seen without the need to login to the site. Since I set up this document only be accessed by authenticated staff, the staff will not know the items is existing untill they login.
I would like it lists in the document library, with everyone can see it lists there, but when click, it will prompt the login screen.
It's good to know there is a setting about automatic logging too. This is another option, but we currently use a portal logging of third part which integrate with Windows authentication called version 3 Enhanced authentication, not sure we can do that, so
in most cases, we need to click signin then enter credentials, then we can login to the site.
Thanks

>I would like it lists in the document library, with everyone can see it lists there, but when click, it will prompt the login >screen.
In that case I suggest you stop using a SharePoint 2007 product and start using SharePoint 2003.
One of the major improvements between the 2003 products and the 2007 products was that items (etc.) that someone had no rights to open were not listed for that person.
There were many complaints with the SP 2003 products that people could see items (etc.) in a list and would only find out after three attempts to login to see the contents that they had no rights to see the contents.
In other words what you seem to want is something that your users definately will not want.
