sharepoint 2007 - home page view
Hi All, Running Sharepoint 2007 sp2. I always thought that a users permission level determines what they can see on the home page. What I mean is, when you go to the home page, along the top and sides is a list of all the other sharepoint sites. As an administrator I can see all the sites. But I thought a user with access to only a few sites should only be able to see those sites. Is that not correct?

Correct a users permission on the subsite will enable that subsite to show up in the navigation automatically (using Publishing Feature activated and Navigation Settings Show SubSite) its called security trimming. there are a few provisos like changing the masterpage to use your own sitemap provider that doesnt security trim the results returned to the user or you are using links that have been manually entered, or using WSS3 where you enetered the Links manually into the TopLinkBaR, etc... -IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.

Hi GuyYuming, How are you? I think your referring to a feature available in SP2010 but is not availabe in SP2007, in both cases by default all navigation is security trimmed... Cheers, -IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.

Keep in mind that users may have some level of permission to sites which you have not explicitly granted. The most obvious is if they are a part of some group which you have given permission on the site, or if you have added all authenticated users to a site's reader group etc. Users may also get a 'Limited Access' permission level on a site if they have some permissions on some item in that site or on a subsite, I believe this may be enough for a site's link to show. Finally I think that manual links may not always be security trimmed and may show to users who do not have permission to view the link.

I'm wondering if the Audiences may help in the case of manual links as referenced by Steven. It may also exclude the Limited Access permission issue as well. Would need to test of course but thought I'd put that out there as I have used this feature of the Global Navigation in past with success. SPJenn

Howdy, Thanks for your help on this. However, I am still a bit lost. I have checked one site permissions thoroughly and only a few people have access to it. However, on the main home site, it is visible for all to see. If you don’t have permission you can click on it but get a denied access message. So basically how do hide the sites that people don’t have access to? Thanks

Please ensure you are using SharePoint 2007 and not WSS3, if you are using WSS3 you do not have the publishing feature.. Site Settings > Look & Feel > Navigation > Choose show subsites and click ok if you do not have navigation and only "Top Links" turn the publishing feature on in Site Collection Feature Administration and in Site Feature Administration Still in Navigation there is a Block "Navigatiion editing and Sorting" that shows the links that will appear in navigation if you see the icon that looks like chains/Links they have been manually added, the links that look like sharepoint sites have been added automatically. Please make one change then review the results after your comfortable you can do more and during off hours where your users will not be affected... -IvanIvan Sanders My LinkedIn Profile, My Blog, @iasanders.
