stsadm export/import and custom views
Do custom views get transported in an export/import for environment
migration (from a development to a production environment)? I would
think they do, but I don't want to assume, and can't find any info
online that's definitive.Thanks!John

In my experience they do.However, the export/import process ins't perfect. For example, KPI's don't really move right because they appear to have internal GUID pointers that don't get updated when they import into the new environment. You will want to allow for some time to test it all out.--Paul Galvin of www.Conchango.com @ http://feeds.feedburner.com/PaulGalvinsSharepointSpace

Good to know which "gotchas" to look out for, thanks.Follow-up...Custom views--yes (or at least probably). What about custom workflows built with SharePoint Designer? Export/Import or only with backup/restore?thanks again!

Hi John,
I am afraid to tell you workflows built with SharePoint Designer cannot be migrated neither with Export/Import nor with backup/restore.
Actually, when you backup/restore the sites, the GUIDs of the document libraries and lists have been changed, the associations of the workflows and libraries and lists are lost.
You should rebuild the workflows in destination sites with SharePoint Designer manually or develop visual Studio workflows.
If you decide to migrate your SharePoint Designer Workflows to Visual Studio workflows, please refer to: Porting SharePoint Designer Workflows to Visual Studio (http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepointdesigner/archive/2007/07/06/porting-sharepoint-designer-workflows-to-visual-studio.aspx)
Hope the information can be helpfu.

Hi Qin,
To correct your conclusion:
In fact, if you do backup/restore, all the guids will be kept except the guid of site (a copy of content db), and all the workflows and association will be restored.
It is export/import that will change all the guids and no workflow will be exported.
Thanks,
Shuo.
