2007 Storage requirements Calculator and BES
Greetings,I'm starting to plan the deployment of Exchange 2007 for about 850 users. Our user breakdown is thus: approximately 30% very Heavy users 40% moderate users and 30% very light users. We alsohave approx 300 blackberry users most of whom are heavy mailbox users. In completing the storage requirements calculator, I am trying to figure how and where to factor in the additional IOPS required by BES.Basically the numbers I'm seeing when I try different calculations don't make a whole lot of sense. The number I keep seeing thrown aroundis that BESincreases IOPS/User by a factor of 3.64. Without any additional IOPS factor in Online mode, my IOPS/user in tier 1 shows as 3.77(!?), when I add in the 3.64 value into the IOPS multiplication factor field it bumps it up to 5.52. The explanation for that field states the formula as (IOPS Value (3.77) * Multiplication Factor(3.64)) + IOPS Value(3.77) = New IOPS Value (5.52) I may not be a math genius but to me that don't add up! I get ~17.5. Ignoring that issue, thecalculator indicatesthe number of spindles I need to be 32.So the first part of my question is, am I entering this value (3.64) into the correct field? There is also a field for Additional I/O requirement / serverwhich tells you how to arrive at the number you are to enter into it. Basically, take your Baseline IOPS per user(3.77) multiply it by the number of users who have blackberries (300) and then multiply that bymy multiplication factor (3.64) and I get ~ 4116. I enter that into the relevant field and that brings the number of disks I require up to 52(?!). So which is correct? DoI have to tell my boss he needs to buy 2 shelves of 15K disks or 4, there's a big price difference there. Any help /thoughts would be appreciated.Thanks.

It is indeed 3.64. You would put this in the field "IOPS Multiplication Factor." If you want to see the formulas, check out: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/07/05/445802.aspxMVP | MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator | MCTS: OCS + Voice Specialization | http://www.shudnow.net
