2007 with POP3 Connector... how to email to another user in the domain who is not yet a mailbox on Exchange?
Hi, Sorry I can't be more descriptive, as I'm trying to explain this. Basically, our users collect their email via POP3 on an external mail server. We are starting to configure the POP3 connector in SBS 2008 to do this role for us. However, users who are now connected to Exchange 2007 cannot email other users who aren't. I'm guessing because exchange has no way of knowing that for addresses that end @domain which don't have mailboxes associated with them, those emails need to be passed out of the domain to the 3rd party email host. How can I get that to work so I can continue to roll out Exchange mailboxes a step at a time whilst still retaining email ability within the organisation for the users? Regards, Jim

It sounds like you have the domain setup as Authoritative instead of as External Relay. You can check this in Organization Configuration -> Hub Transport -> Accepted Domains.ThanksWillWill Shepherd - MCSE/MCITP/MCTS (Windows 2008,Exchange 2007,OCS 2007)

Hi Will, Thanks for the reply. I've checked that and you are absolutely correct. If I reconfig to act as an External relay then am I correct in assuming that will send everything out regardless of whether the recipient has an active mailbox? It won't cause any issues elsewhere? When I've completed all the POP3 connector mailboxes I should then changed the setting back to Authoritative, yes? Cheers Jim

Yes as an External Relay it will send everything out. Once you have the mailboxes setup change it back to Authoritative and you should be good.ThanksWillWill Shepherd - MCSE/MCITP/MCTS (Windows 2008,Exchange 2007,OCS 2007)

Hmm... I can't change the setting to be an external relay because.... I get an error on "set-accepteddomain". "Cannot remove the domain 'domain name ' because it is referenced by the proxy address template 'SMTP:%g.%s@domain name ' Do I therefore have to remove this also for now and then just make a note to add email addresses manually to any new users?

Try adding a second domain and then make it the Default domain then change the original domain to external relay. You can make it something like company.local.Will Shepherd - MCSE/MCITP/MCTS (Windows 2008,Exchange 2007,OCS 2007)

Hi Will Just found time to get back to this problem. I note there is already a "domain.local" domain present and that is set to default. So, not sure what to do next other than removing the address template. Any thoughts? Cheers, Jim

Hi, Just to finish this thread off. I managed to sort this out through the help of another forum member. The answer was to set the accepted domain to type 'Internal Relay'
