A Question about Exchange 2003
I have Some Questions about Exchange 2003:
We have in Company 3 Physical Servers for Exchange:
- Exchange Server 2003 in Clusters Mode 2 Server
- Gateway Server 1 Server
We have 2 Other Servers Named
- Cluster Name
- Virtual Name
Please Brief me about the Functionality of all the Above Servers and how they work.
I want to learn about Exchange as i don't know about it and i promoted from IT Engineer to System Administrator.

First, I would get a book on Exchange 2003 like Exchange 2003 Unleashed -
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Exchange-Server-2003-Unleashed/dp/0672328070
Next you need to review the Exchange 2003 documentation -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123872(EXCHG.65).aspx
As a quick reply to your actual question:
If have 3 servers, with two being in a cluster, that means you have a Windows 2003 cluster which has a name attached to it which you can gleen from the Cluster Services console. These two servers are also going to be attached
to a single set of disk drives as well since Windows/Exchange share this cluster. The Exchange application also has a name attached to it usually known as the Exchange Virtual Server. You Outlook client will connect to this for MAPI connectivity.
The last server is probably a Front End server which handles OWA and ActiveSync traffic from internal and external connections.
There is a lot more to this than that paragraph I wrote. I would read the books quickly and then just explore the Exchange 2003 console to see what is in there.JAUCG

Thanks for Replying.
Dear,
I have few more Confusions can you please elaborate:
1- Where these two servers (EVS & Cluster Name) Will be Placed, I mean I have 2 Physical servers...So how to check where these servers are located Physically on which Server as When i Check all the Servers I see same setting.
2- there is no need for Gateway server in case we are not Sending emails to other domains?
3- How to Check that we are using IMAP or POP3?
Silly Questions but sorry as i am New to field.
thanks

My Exchange 2003 knowledge is a bit rusty when it comes to the exact locations of things, but I will recall the best I can from my memory.
1) Cluster Manager will tell you where the physical servers (nodes) are. The Exchange System Manager will show these two servers as one virtual name, which I believe is listed in the Cluster Manager as well.
2) Is all email internal and are you using any mobile phones to sync emails?
3) For IMAP and POP, I believe it is in the Exchange System Manager under the server name and Protocols. Or is is under services where you see something like Microsoft Exchange IMAP or POP. If they are started and running, then you are using
them.
No problems, but should get a book as well and explore Technet as it will help you out.JAUCG
