Adding Exchange 2003 FE Server
Hi all - For a few yearsmy company wasa single Exchange 2003 Server shop. We use standard features as well as OWA, Active Sync and HTTP over RPC. This being said, the backend server is configured to host these services. Irecently installed a FE server into our environment and attempted to move the 3 services mentioned above onto it and have failed at my first attempt. There isn't a firewall between the servers right now and they are essentially on the same network. The FE server is pretty much unconfigured with the exception of the "This is a Front End Server" setting. I have read the best practices and stopped the nonrelevant services and such also. I managed to get RPC over HTTP working (from the Internet), and OWA displays the logon page but doesnt allow me any further when supplying my credentials, the page just kind of refreshes. Active Sync returns and error that the user account doesn't have permissions for this function but it did on the BE server. I have medium logging on and see very few events. I see my logins in the iis http logs. Back in the day, there were several tricks to get Active Sync to run on a standalone server which entailed creating a new VDIR, restricting the local host IP (If I recall) and a few other tricks. Could the remnants of the single (backend) server environment be cauing my issues? Can someone suggest an approach that will zero out theIIS settings on the backend and place the proper settings on the FE? I have read several docs and they all seem to assume you have installed the servers at the same time. Thanks for you support!

Did you reboot after you checked the box indicating it was a front-end server? Or at least stop and restart the HTTP, POP3, and IMAP4 services?
