Additional license required for Edge Transport role?
Hi Sir,
For our understanding the Edge server just like a gateway for mail routing do we need to install the exchange license on it? We have keep receiving error message below when we open the EMC and select Server configuration. We are going to deploy two edge
server, does it means we need to exchange cert for two edge servers?
The Exchange Certificate operation has failed with an exception. The error message is: Access is denied It was running the command "Get-ExchangeCertificate -Server 'edge1".
When we run the command to EMS Get-ExchangeCertificate -Server edge1 we receive the error message below:
The Exchange Certificate operation has failed with an exception. The error message is: Access is denied
+ CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (:) [Get-ExchangeCertificate], LocalizedException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : F9862983,Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.GetExchangeCertificate
Please advise!

Hi Lasse,
Thanks for sharing, lets say we are not using Edge as SMTP, can we bypass to install the license? Would it be any problem?

Edge can only do SMTP, so an Edge server without SMTP wouldn't be anything.
How would you use Edge without SMTP ?

And how does the e-mail get to the edge server and then to the HT
server? I'd guess it uses SMTP!
You need a license. If the license is too costly then use Linux, CLAM,
and SpamAssassin for the job. If that's too much then buy a security
appliance to accomplish the job.

Thanks for your advise. We have 6 license exchange and plus 2 for edge server. As we have 2 x edge, 2 x hub, 2 x cas and 2 x mailstore.

So you need 8 licenses. The edge licenses can be for the less
expensive "standard" server. You should be using those licenses for
your HT and CAS servers, too.
