Address List Segregation in Exchange 2007
I've just spent hours going the through the white paper on Configuring Virtual Organizations and Address List Segregation in Exchange 2007 I'm running Exchange Server 2007 sp1 on a testing server, 2008 x64. The server is a DC on it's own domain. I've followed it to the word, but rather than creating a 'company' called fabrikam with the necesaary OU and GALs, I've used the name 'Staff', because it's what I plan to do with my production server. (School environment, Staff and Pupil OUs - I don't want Pupils to see the Staff address list) For starters, I've created a new user, left him entirely out of the new OUs, (he's just in the default 'users' OU) and then logged into OWA. I go to new message, and low and behold I can see the Staff GAL...... so, so far the whole thing has been pointless. Fpr seconds, the OAB started acting a little strange when having a look on the exchange console. I refreshed the snap in, and the OABs dissapeared! When I try to create a new one, it crashes the snap in, excalty when I click on the 'Add' button to include the neccessary address list (Staff Address List). Clueless about this one.... Anyway, any help with this would be great thanks. I'm sure I've missed somthing - I assume this normally works.

Hi Dave,You will need to populate theMsExchQueryBaseDN attribute for the new user with the DN of the Pupils OU.Thats the attribute that controls the search criteria for the GAL in OWA.Hope that helps.James

Thanks, that's great for the first part. Unfortunately I had to go into ADSI Edit and manually set the value because no matter what I try I can't get the cmdlet to work that's stated in the white paper. It does work though, so it was definitely that I was missing. I'm still a little confused about the dissapearance of the OABs, and now (interestingly!) I can't seem to see the All Address Lists either......... I've just tried to create another Address List (for Pupils OU) and unfortunatley It fails. I'm getting the following error: I'm just putting the new address list in the default place - container \ - if i go to choose a xcontainer (in console), it crashes. Error: Address List "\" was not found. Please make sure you have typed it correctly. I'm slowly breaking my server!

Hi again everyone, I wondered if anyone has any input on this. The main thing now is that when I try to create a new address list, the exchange console crashes. I get the following error: Unhandled Exception in Managed Code Snap-in FX:{76dd58f7-54ba-42e3-a2e0-dbf4b674539f} Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. Exception type: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException I can't create a list in the shell either: New-AddressList -Name "Pupil AL" -Container '\' -IncludedRecipients 'AllRecipients' -conditionalcustomattribute1 "Pupil" I get this error: Address list "\" was not found. Please make sure you have typed it correctly. Any ideas?

Hi, This is problem with the logged-in user credentials. The user which you used to log into exchange server doesn't have permission to see all Address Lists or create new one. I propose you to create a new user in AD, add all security groups to this user which builtin administrator has and then log into exchange server using this new user. You will be able to manage it like this. Hope this helps. Regards, Laeeq Qazi|Snr Software Engineer(Exchange + Sharepoint + BES + DynamicsCRM) www.hostingcontroller.com
