Administering Mailbox
Hi,
I wish our IT Helpdesk staff to administer mailboxes without giving them Full Administration rights. The kind of task i am looking for them to be able to do is setup 'Forwarding' on a users mailbox.
Is this possible and what would be required?
Would they need access to the Exchange server(s)?
Regards
Tony

Hi,
What's version of your exchange server?
In Exchange 2007, to set up 'Forwarding' on a user's mailbox, the account you used must be able to run Set-Mailbox command.
To run Set-Mailbox, the account must be the member of Exchange Recipient Administrators . Then this account can set up "Forwarding" for user's mailbox by using
Exchange management shell but not Exchange Management Console. The following example shows how to forward thomas' e-mail messages to other mailbox (user@domain.com).
Set-Mailbox -Identity thomas -DeliverToMailboxAndForward $true -ForwardingAddress user@domain.com
To do this by using Exchange Management Console, the account must be the member of the following groups:
Exchange Recipient Administrators
Exchange View Only Administrators
More information about Set-Mailbox command, please refer the following article:

Do the IT Helpdesk have to be logged on to the Exchange server to run Exch Management Console or Exch Management Shell?

You can install the toolsets on their workstations, what sort of tasks are they going to do?

Hi,
No, you need to install the 32/64-bit exchangemanagement tools on the pc's of the helpdesks people.
You can also give them a customized Exchange Management Console so they can only see the Recipients container and NOT the org and server part.
To customize an Exchange Management Console:

Hi,
You should copy the saved mmc that you created.
Open that on your PC and you will see the result of the customized mmc.

the customized mmc is supposed to be created on the exchange server itself, saved then you can open it on your pc just like Timmy said.

Hi,
After installing Exchange Management Tools, you can find the exchange Management console and Shell by clicking start button->All Programs->Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.
