In regarding of the issue, please provide us more information to assist you better.
- Which version of Excel do you use?
- Where did you see the options to change the cell style?
As far as I know, there are two ways to assign/change the cell style/format. Please see the image below:
1) Home tab>Number group>Click the drop down arrow> You can see several cell format, such as Text/number and so on.
2)Home tab>Style group>Click the drop down arrow>You can apply several formats.
Since you said >>I tried 'Number' but that didn't work.<<, I recommend we select the cell/range which you have applied the format=>right click=>Cell format=>Check the format.
