Backup Recommendations
I am in the process of migrating to Exchange 2007. I will be using NetBackup 6.5.4. I have the option of granular backups but not sure this is the way I want to go. My thought are to do a weekend full backups and then backup the logs nightly during the week. Is this a good choice? Do I use VSS and would this be hard to restore. I have just played with the RSG feature of 2007 and it looks good. Currently I am just creating backups using the backup feature from windows 2008. This is ok while I am moving mailboxes but want to move to netbackup soon.

HI Norman ,Your choice is good as backing up Weekend full backup and daily transaction log backup. Exchange 2007 SP2 and windows 2008 supports VSS backups though. Deleted item retention and the RSG, I dont think you'll find any need to use the GRT solution. As for 3rd party recommendations, that is really your preference. BackUpExec is a solution that many choose. NetBackup is probably not as popular simply because its usually behind on Exchange support and is typically used when an org has purchased the entire NetBackup suite. We are using NetBackup 6.5.3 on Windows 2008 SP2 / Exchange 2007 SP1 Rollup 9. Workswell and appears to be highly reliable. We do weekly full and daily "incremental / differential" (I think it is called) - which basically means incremental. Restore to RSG works fine. You should use VSS.Backups from VSS are not hard to restore. You typically have a two LUN layout for your backup set (databases and transaction log files). All this will be backed up in one job. This could be 10 databases with 2 TB of data. You can easily chose to restore only one database, for instance to an RSG.I agree with Chinthaka. My first choice for Exchange is Backup Exec. However in large organizations NetBackup with Domino Notes, DB2, Oracle ... NetBackup seems to be good choice and quite impressive. BTW, NetBackup 6.5.3 was the first version to support Exchange 2007 on Windows 2008, so it lags a bit behind. MCTS: Messaging | MCSE: S+M | Small Business Specialist

I am using 6.5.4 netbackup. In you job do you just backup the information store? Do you just backup logs for increemental or the database as well?

For the weekly full backup, we backup the databases (or stores). For the daily incremental, we back up the logs. In both cases the transaction logs are deleted. In a different backup job, wetake snapshots ofthe servers without the volumes / LUNs containing the databases and log files, with the option of doing a bare metal restore. For more details:Veritas NetBackup 6.5.4 for Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator's Guidehttp://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/320793.htmP.S. It took some time until NetBackuphad full Exchange 2007 support on Windows 2008. I don't think it is "usually behind on Exchange support." On the contrary, I find it an impressive product. Thanks. I am starting to like Netbackup. I performed a successful backup. I was however unable to use snapshots for some reason but according to the docs as I don't need this. I can create a RSG and restore from the streaming backups. I would like to eventually get VSS working through. Thanks,
