Backup and Restore Public Folders
I'm planning to assist a company in a migration from an Exchange 2003 hosted platform to Exchange 2007 in house. We need to somehow get the extensive public folder data from the hosted provider into our Exchange 2007 organization. I see a Microsoft chat transcript indicating that Microsoft recommends using Outlook and manually dragging and dropping the data. This will take a week with the amount of data my client has! There has to be a better way. Can someone recommend any out-of-the-box ideas, or 3rd party tools? Here is the transcript I was talking about: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Host: Chris (Microsoft) Q: We can use ExMerge to import data from a .pst into a mailbox. Is there an equivalent tool to import/export public folder content? A: yes you can use ExMerge to import data into a mailbox from a PST, there is not an equivalent for Public Folders, we in support make a PST in Outlook and drag and drop. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/chats/trans/exchange/exch0618.mspx

Hi Mike, There're many third party tools. However, there're not freeoropen source. Free OST to PST converter http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-501&fp_ip=SG&p=free+ost+to+pst+converter&rs=1&fr2=rs-top Regards, Thomas Mike Crowley wrote: Can someone recommend any out-of-the-box ideas, or 3rd party tools?

What does an ost to pst converter have to do with anything? Also, I didn't request an open source tool, I am considering all options.

Hi Mike, I'm guessing you are migrating to a green-field Exchange 2007 environment. That makes things more difficult as I'm not aware of any third party tools for this, but Quest Migrator Manager may do the trick http://www.quest.com/migration-manager-for-exchange/features-benefits.aspx. edit: Actually after reading some whitepapers.... It is possible to use this tool, even when migrating from more than one forest. If you have the luxary of an Exchange 2003 server in your target forest, you can use Interorg to replicate PF data across to the other forest, and use PFAdmin to dump/import ACLs. Otherwise I should stick with the PST recommendation, which may be very laboreous when it comes to massive amounts of data. Cheers, Mark

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't even think of interorg. I wonder if the hosting provider would allow this.
