Can't do anything with new install
I just installed Exchange 2010 on Server 2008 R2. I'm the Administrator with memberships in the following groups:
Delegated Setup
Discovery management
Help desk
Hygiene management
Organization management
Public Folder Management
Recipient Management
Records Management
Server Management
UM Management
Domain Admins
Schema Admins
Enterprise Admins
Domain Users
I can't add users, can't manage pretty much anything. I'm trying to enter the product key and the branch in the EMC isn't there. Here's what I get if I try to enter the key using the Exchange Command Shell:
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Set-ExchangeServer -Identity mail -ProductKey ****
The term 'Set-ExchangeServer' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program.
What's going on? According to MS documentation, the Ogranization Management role should allow me to do everything I need. I can't even create a user account and I have every permission possible. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Just making sure here....are you sure you are logging as a domain account? I have seen issues if the local administrator account is named the same as the domain administrator account...like "administrator". When you type in administrator it is
logging in as the local admin instead of the domain admin.
Can you browse to \\DCServer\sysvol ?
Can you use a different account with the same groups and see what happens?Tim Harrington - Catapult Systems - http://HowDoUC.blogspot.com

I thought of that too, thanks. I am logged in as the domain administrator. I can browse to the folder you mentioned above and can enter the folders within it. I'll try a different user and see what happens. Thanks.

Are all the services started? Have you checked to be sure the domain controllers are not having any replicaitons issues?Chris Morgan

I'm trying to help a friend install a new copy of XP. His Acer notebook comes installed with Vista. I want to make his computer a dual-boot system, or at worst, remove Vista, reformat the whole hard drive and start anew.

Ok so the original installation was interrupted by a power failure. It left this Exchange server orphaned in AD and corrupted the installation.
So I blew away the entire server, removed it from AD and reinstalled everything from scratch. First it wouldn't install because it saw the old echange server in AD. So I removed that and eventually got through the install again.
Same problem!! The domain administrator has every permission known to Exchange and it still tells me I don't have management permissions (although I can see the Configuration branch now).
So I created a new user in the domain, gave it Domain Admins and Organization Management. When I log in and load the Exchange console it says "the user [me] isn't assigned any management roles".
The only errors in the event logs are those saying a user trying to log in doesn't have permission.
Do I have to blow away the entire domain and all of its servers to get this to install properly?
Any help appreciated, this is a disaster.
Thanks

Hi Trwilson,
1. I would check the needed services on the exchange server all start.
2. Run Exbpa on the exchange server, and post the special information here
If you have the account which is a member of the group you referred, and still can not do the operation, it must be that the installtion failed.
3. Do you install all the roles on the same server? confirm every roles installed well.
Some information for you:

I had to blow away the entire domain. The install failed during the AD prep for exchange and toasted the database. It wouldn't matter what server I tried to install Exchange on, AD was corrupt. So I killed all domain controllers and started
the whole thing from scratch. Exchange is re-installed and giving me all the configuration options available.
Thanks very much for the input.
