Can't recover deleted items in Exchange 2013 OWA

I have two Exchange 2013 SP1 CAS servers (no CUs). I try to restore a deleted message in OWA (right-click on the Deleted folder, click Recover Deleted Items) and receive Error 404 in the popup window (Chrome) or "Something went wrong" in IE. In addition, the IE window contains the following explanation of the error:

Our CAS servers are joined to a NLB cluster, but the error is the same whether I connect to the NLB name or to a specific CAS Server.

All other links in OWA and ECP work fine, no errors.

Looks like a bug in the Exchange code. Does someone besides me encounter the same

I assume Outlook is working fine. Is it happening with One User only or other users too?

Gulab,

Yes, Outlooks works just fine. I can access the Deleted Items dumpster using the same context menu item in a full-fledged Outlook.

In OWA, it happens to all users, or at least to all users I tested (3 or 4).

I never used this option, so I don't know whether it worked before. However, today one of users connected via IMAP requested recovering a message he deleted recently. Of course, I can restore it from a backup, but the process is too long and troubl

I am sure you have latest version of IE or at least IE10 and you tried with all other browsers.

What happens when test it with Test Mailbox? Does it works?
Try move one Mailbox to another database and test the issue.
If above doesn't works than Disable the Mailbox and Enable it again and Test Recover Deleted Items.

It doesn't matter what version of a web browser I use. Exchange has no requirement of using specific browser versions, and I can't regulate what browsers the users use.  The error is thrown in any browser I tried, and it's encountered in all mailboxes.

I have no other databases, so I have nowhere to move a mailbox.

Judging by the error message, this is an internal OWA issue. It's not related to a specific mailbox or a PC. Gulab, please tell me: do YOU experience the same problem and what's your Exchange SP/CU version?

I have seen lot of issue with OWA where as it's not processing the requests, but not specific to Recover Deleted Items.
Haven't even tested it in the LAB, will test in the LAB and update you.

I am running CU7 in the LAB.

Hi There,

You are not the only one experiencing this issue. I have the same issue with an Exchange 2013 CU7. It has been setup in hosted mode. I don't know if that causes the issue. When i connect with Outlook 2010 or 2013 client, the recovery of deleted items is not an issue. So i think it must be an IIS authentication issue.

I have not figured it out yet.

Hi,

Based on this situation, I would suggest to rebuild OWA virtual directory to check this issue.

Recreate OWA Virtual Directory:

Remove-OwaVirtualDirectory -Identity Servername\owa (Default Web Site)

New-OwaVirtualDirectory -InternalUrl https://ServerFQDN/owa -WebSiteName Default Web Site

Reset IIS: IISReset /force

Best Regards.

Lynn-Li,

Rebuilding OWA virtual directories is not as simple as it sounds. :) I did slight modifications to its source files (nothing possibly related to this issue), so I'd have to restore them as well. Anyways, I doubt that a corrupted directory is the cause if the issue as I vaguely recall that I already did it some time ago to repair some small issues.

I asked this question on another forum as well and received an advice to install the current CU and see if it corrects the problem. I'm intending to wait till after SP2 is out (and it should be out in a month or two) and then install it. If it doesn't help, I'll rebuild the virtual folders as well.

I highly doubt that SP2 is coming in few months, you might see Exchange 2015 in few months :)

Suggestion would be to install the latest CU and check the issue.
By the way, how many servers do you have?

> I highly doubt that SP2 is coming in few months

We'll see. :) In the end, it was the developers' idea to publish CUs and SPs instead of regularly distributing updates via WSUS. They should stick to their own timetable, shouldn't they?

> how many servers do you have?

Two CASes (NLB) and two mailboxes (DAG).

We are also experiencing the issue on Exchange 2013 SP1 with no CUs.

I also experience this issue with Exchange 2013 SP1 (=CU4).

X-OWA-Error: ClientError;exMsg=Sys.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range.Parameter name: Unknown type _d.$Vq was requested;file=Sys.ArgumentException: Sys.ArgumentException: Value does not fall within the expected range.Parameter name: Unknown type _d.$Vq was requested

Has anyone solved it by upgrading to CU8?
