Can't see second NIC -- making no external access for Email server
I'm setting up my first Exchange server. I've worked on Exchange for a couple years with my previous employer, but never set one up from scratch. Fortunately, I'm using a dumbed down version that comes with SBS-2003. I am running my Exchange server on a test network until I get it running. So, with this, I'll give out my current IP configuration. I'm running two NIC's. My connection will be: DSL modem, Firewall/Router, Server. Off the Firewall/Router I'll also sent signal to another router which sends to my company's drops. My first NIC on the server will be used for internal access: file sharing, email, intranet, etc. IP of 10.5.5.10 My second NIC will be for internet access for Email, and OWA (Outlook Web Access). IP of 10.5.5.15 I am running my AD and Email on the same server, as well as DHCP and DNS (is this over working the server?). The IP of the Gateway is the router IP: 10.5.5.1 Currently, I can ping the first NIC from a client machine. I can ping the client from the server. I cannot ping the second NIC from the client, nor the server to client. SO... I tested the NIC to make sure it was functioning. I put it on the live network and accessed the internet, did my updates, etc with no issues. So, the NIC works. I've made sure the NIC's DNS properties are "register the connection's address in DNS". On the private network, I can access http://companyweb with no issues. I can even set up my client machine's Outlook just fine. BUT, I can't see the server through the second NIC; therefore, I can't access the server from the outside. I've forwarded ports 25, 80, and 443 to the second NIC on the firewall and to the firewall from the modem. Still, nothing. Obviously, I'm missing something. Does anyone know what I've overlooked? Needs for this server: Email (access internally and externally - either web pagebut preferthrough Outlook), DHCP, Printserver, DNS (if that is needed), file sharing/storage. Thanks for any help given! I'll do my best to stay up with help and steps I take as I go.

Hi, If you really must use 2 nic's I would configure these on 2 different IP subnets, but there is no need to use more than one nic so why not just configure everything to use the working one. Makes everything much easier. Leif

Thank you Leif. I agree. This is my exact thing I'm working on now. I guess my assumption was that two NIC's would create more security. For now... I simply need to make ONE work! Thanks for your input.
