Can I Install Rollup updates right after applying Exchange 2010 SP3 ?

We are planning to upgrade Exchange 2010 to SP3 with latest rollup updates. We have 3 HUB/CAS servers and 3 mailbox servers in a DAG. We are not quite confident if we can install Rollup updates right after applying SP3 to all servers. We think we probably wait a few days after applying SP3 to identify any potential issues before move on to the rollup updates . However SP3 is quite buggy and it requires patching as soon as possible. What's your best practices and experience? Thanks in advan

I usually wait to apply updates a month or two after they come out.  That being said, I guess it really depends on how your environment is configured.  If you already have Exchange Servers deployed at SP3 RU(X) then I would defintiely deploy RU(X) after SP3 since the current environment has already vetted it and I like to have all my servers at the same patch level where ever possible.    If not, I wouldn't think installing RU6/RU7 right after installing Sp3 would be a huge deal RU6/RU7 has been out for a while so it's probably pretty stable.

I would patch the Update Rollup as soon as possible as we would have higher risk of known bugs with SP3 compare to SP3 + Latest update rollups... :)

Thank you for your reply. To minimize the impact to users, we will do upgrade after hours. We are not quite sure if we can  finish the upgrade and patching in one night so we are thinking to do the HUB/CAS and mailbox servers in two separate night.   Dose following plan sound good to you?

Night 1- Install SP3+ Rollup8 v2 on three HUB/CAS servers

Night 2 - Install SP3+ Rollup8 v2 on three HUB/CAS servers

You could do that.  You really only have to do the first server by itself.  So I would probably do HUBCAS1, then HUBCAS2 + MBX1, HUBCAS3 + MBX2, MBX3 and then you could get it all done in one night.  If you dont want to that ,then doing all HUBCAS Servers one night and then all Mailbox Servers the next night is an ok way to go.

I found SP3 didn't prompt a reboot after the installation when I installed in the lab. Should I reboot the server after applying SP3 and then start patching it with Rollup updates? or I can do the reboot after complete both  SP3 and Rollup updates installation ?

I almost always reboot a server after I apply patches to it
