Cannot Delete Orphaned Mailbox
Hello All - I have a strange problem. I have a mailbox that I can see in the EMC. The AD account for this mailbox is gone. If I try and remove or disable the mailbox, it gives the error "The Operation couldn't be performed because
object 'domain controller/User Accounts/Username' couldn't be found on 'domain controller'.
So - I went to the EMS. In there - I was able to get the GUID of the mailbox that I want to delete. I then tried to remove the mailbox with the command:
Remove-StoreMailbox -database "databasename" -identity GUID -MailboxState Disabled
The response was that the mailbox in not disabled.
So then I try this command:
Disable-Mailbox username@domainname.com
The response is:
The operation couldn't be performed because object username @ domainname .com couldn't be found on 'domaincontroller'. Yes - we know that.
I just need to delete this mailbox. Anyone have any ideas? Let me know, and thanks!

Hi ,
I just want to know how to Orphan it ?
I test in my lab, if I delete the account on DC, the mailbox will be deleted automatically. if you only disable the account, please enable it and then move it.
If the account on AD can't be found, maybe you need to restore it.Wendy Liu

Hi Wendy,
Does it really matter how it was orphaned? I guess someone went in and deleted the account in AD before they removed it in Exchange. All I know is - it is there and there is no AD account.
I tried to recreate an account in AD, and attach it to the mailbox, but that won't work either.
HELP!
Greg

So when you created new AD account (TEST Account) for this Orphaned mailbox it failed to connect to the mailbox?Gulab Prasad,

Yes Sir. I even tried to force it to connect - and it refuses. So - is there a way to disconnect and delete the mailbox?

Do you get any error message when trying to connect the AD account? Gulab Prasad,

Well - let me make sure you know - the original AD account has been gone for some time. So - I created one of the same name and tried to reconnect it - and it refuses to associate them. I am guessing because the new account has a new SID?

No, it shouldn't matter if it's new AD account.

Ok - remember this is Exchange 2010 - I went to the EMS - typed in "Update-StoreMailboxState" the result is:
The term 'Update-StoreMailboxState' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Etc......

Hmm, I was under impression that you are running exchange 2013.
Anyways, here is the command for exchange 2010
Clean-MailboxDatabse -Identity "DatabseName"
Database name will be were this mailbox belonged too.
post the updateGulab Prasad,

Ok - ran that command. All I got was a prompt back - [PS] C:\Windows\systems32>. The mailbox is still there.

And sorry to all - I didn't realize that I had put this in the 2013 forum - not the 2010 forum.

No - that is what is so strange about this mailbox. It is not disconnected. You can see in the very first post here - the mailbox thinks that it is not disconnected. But it is not associated with an AD account.

Well if it's not associated with AD account then it should be in Disconnected mailbox.
Did you tried to dismount and mount the database (mailbox) and check if you still see the mailbox?
And post the Event ID 2080 from the exchange server.Gulab Prasad,

No - that I have not tried since it is in production. Is that easy to do? I would have to schedule that down time.

Not sure what you mean about post ID 2080.
Ok - to dismount - in the EMC - go under Organization Configuration, then Mailbox. There right click on the database and dismount. Then wait a while, and mount it back?
I appreciate your help with this.
