Cannot Save Excel 2007 as PDF

Can someone help me? I do not understand this at all. I have been trying to Save an Excel 2007 file as a PDF and it won't do it. I have been trying this for an hour. I have download the patch add on so the option does show up in Excel under Save As.

Save As-->PDF or XPS. The window appears as normal to Save As with PDF appearing by default as Save File Type as.

Underneath there are 3 additinal choices:

Open file after publishing (left UNchecked)

Standard (publish online and printing)

Minimize size (publish on-line) <-----chosen radio button

Click Publish and......

No printers are installed. To add a printer..............

I am NOT printing. I am SAVING.

Then I tried this. Opened up Excel 2007 spreadsheet. Save As-->Other Format (this choice appears directly under PDF or XPS)

I changed the default Save File Type as from Excel Worksheet to PDF.

The same 3 options from above appear again:

Open file after publishing (left UNchecked)

Standard (publish online and printing)

Minimize size (publish on-line) <-----chosen radio button

Instead of a Publish button (as before), it is replaced with the Save button.

Click Save and .........

No printers are installed. To add a printer.............

What is the deal with saving an Excel file.

I did the same thing to a Word 2007 file and (again) with the same 3 options appearing in the Save As window, clicking the Publish or Save button DOES work, saving the WORD file as a .pdf...........so why does it error out while saving an Excel 2007 sheet as a .pdf looking for a default printer??? I am most frustrated with this. The exact same way must work in both Word and Excel. Why it does not work in Excel is most baffling.

Anyone who can tell me why this is not working is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

hi,

Since googling lands here, Im posting an answer.

What you need to do is just install a printer driver. (You don't actually need to have a real printer connected)

So on XP, you would go to Control Panel->Printers & Handward - > Add Printer.

Choose local printer -> Leave the default COM Port. -> You'll get to a list of brands/providers and their printers. It doesn't matter what you select. Click next and let it install.

Voila!

If any developers land here and figure how to deploy a default printer please add you answer.

I had the same issue after installing Windows 8. I followed  gideonisrael's advice to resolve it and it worked:

On Windows 8, mouse over to the Charms on the right side of the screen, select Settings>Control Panel>Devices and Printers. Click "Add a Printer" at the  top of the window. The program will start searching for installed printers; click "The printer I want wasn't listed." Select "Add a local printer...with manual settings."

Select the printer you want to add. I selected the  existing "Print to File" port, then one of the Microsoft XPS Document writers. Install using the current driver, restart Excel, and save your files as a PDF.

"Run Programs" > services.msc

then click OK.

in the local services, organize by name by clicking on "name" and then look for "Print Spooler"  - >  if "Print Spooler" is set to {manual or disabled}

right click on print spooler and then click on properties. > Start > then change the "Startup type" to automatic and click > apply > ok.

works like a charm- if you're missing print spooler- see the comments about installing a driver.
