Hi Rob,

Since Office 2013, Microsoft is using Bootsrapper technology. It is responsible for the initialization of an application.

There are many reasons for the happening of this problem like a beta edition of Office exists, antivirus or firewall program or other security software, etc.

Please try below steps to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. Temporary disable antivirusFirewall or other security programs, then try again.
  2. If you have any previous version of Office installed on your computer, please try to use Microsoft Fix It tool to remove any traces for the old instance.
  3. Test in Windows clean boot and see if issue persists: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

If issue persists, please check out this general troubleshooting KB article, try the steps listed in it and see if it helps: General troubleshooting for installing Office 2013 and Office 365

Hope it helps.

I agree with Ethan's advice.

The version of office I am installing is

en office professional plus 2013 with sp1 x86 and x64

The error log shows:

...Cannot start standalone OSE. from <path>\en_office_professional_plus_2013_with_sp1_x86_and_x64_dvd_3928186\x86\proplusr.ww\ose.exe. Error code: 0x80070102

proplusr.ww, suggests that this is the MSDN edition (because proplusR.ww, is the Retail license edition, while proplus.ww, is the VL edition) (also, en_office_professional_plus_2013_with_sp1_x86_and_x64_dvd_3928186 is the MSDN download filename)

Taking a guess that this machine might have other Office components is residence (if it's a dev machine).
If you've attempted to install other Office products on this machine previously, remnants of those previous attempts could be the cause.
I'd recommend using the Fixit, to clean all those remnants away:

Hi,

You're right that this is the MSDN version. Prior to installation, I removed Office 2010.

I've tried all of the recommendations so far and none have worked.

  • The fixit tool (50450) just says "failed to process"
  • The fixit tool from kb 2739501 just says "troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem"
  • Clean boot made no difference
  • Disabling anti virus didn't work either
  • I've also removed Citrix software, as suggested by another post, to no avail.

What am I missing here? What could be the issue? Some dependency that's missing?

Thanks,

Rob

After enabling verbose logging via Config.xml I get this error:

I managed to fix this... heres what I did:

  1. I extracted the MSDN ISO to my downloads folder
  2. I created an office 2013 config file with logging set to verbose and copied it to the x64 installer directory
  3. I ran the installer and looked in my temp folder (c:\users\rob.henwood\AppData\Local\Temp)
  4. The log file created said Cannot detect OSE Service
  5. I found the OSE Service in the setup folder from the ISO
  6. I looked on another machine and found where it is installed then copied the registry settings for the OSE service.
  7. I restarted the machine and found the Office 64 Source Engine service now existed. I started the service.
  8. I ran the Office installer again and it all worked OK!

Steps to fix:
  1. Create a folder for OSE
    1. C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Source Engine
  2. Copy the OSE.exe file to that folder
  3. Open the OSE.reg file (shown below) and apply the registry settings in that file to your registry
  4. Restart your machine
  5. Open services (services.msc) and see that  Office 64 Source Engine is installed
  6. Start the service
  7. Try installing Office 2013/Visio 2013.

I tried everything listed in this thread. but nothing seems to work. I still get MS office encountered an error. then when I click close, I get boostrapper has stopped working.

What else is there that can be done?

You're a lifesaver! This worked perfectly when nothing else did!

Just a note for anyone who's wondering, Rob's solution works regardless of whether you're trying to install the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office.
