Cannot open mailbox ... cn=Microsoft System Attendant

Hello,

I've recently introduced an Exchange Server 2013 in a single Exchange 2007 Server environment.

While most things seem to work out of the box, I have some issues:

When I use the Get-CalendarProcessing cmdlet on a mailbox hosted on the Exchange 2007 server or go in Exchange admin center > recipients > resources, I get this error message: Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ConnectionFailedTransientException: Cannot open mailbox /o=<org>/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Configuration/cn=Servers/cn=<server>/cn=Microsoft System Attendant. ---> Microsoft.Mapi.MapiExceptionNetworkError: MapiExceptionNetworkError: Unable to make connection to the server. (hr=0x80040115, ec=-2147221227)

Another problem is that, when I navigate to Outlook Web App > People and try to search the directory, I get this: An error occured while searching. Please try again.

Same problem there: New mail > To: > Search Contacts and Directory: Can't connect. Please try again later.

And last but not least: I cant connect Outlook to the Exchange 2013 server, unless I add the "DS Server" entry in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Exchange Provider]

Any help would be highly appreciated!

Hi,

From your description, I would like to clarify the following things for troubleshooting:

1. Make sure that Exchange server is up and all the services Exchange server needed are running normally.

2. Ensure that the following network ports are open on the Exchange server: 53 (TCP) DNS, 88 (TCP) Kerberos, 135 (TCP) RPC End Point, 389 (TCP) LDAP, 443 (TCP) HTTPS Mailbox Replication Proxy service uses port 443 to communicate with other Exchange client access server via HTTPS, 445 (TCP) Microsoft-DS Service, 808 (TCP) Mailbox Replication Service uses to communicate, 3268 LDAP.

Hope this can be helpful to you.

make sure that arbitration mailboxes are present and are valid.

Get-Mailbox -Arbitration

Also check whether if the Microsoft System Attendant CN Object on ADSIEDIT holds valid Database's Distinguished Name for HomeMDB Attribute.

Check this and revert back with your findings.

Hello,

Thank you for your replies.

All Exchange services are running on both servers and there is no firewall between them.

Arbitration mailboxes are present:

Name                      Alias                ServerName       ProhibitSendQuota

----                      -----                ----------       -----------------

SystemMailbox{1f05a927... SystemMailbox{1f0... iris             Unlimited

SystemMailbox{bb558c35... SystemMailbox{bb5... iris             Unlimited

SystemMailbox{e0dc1c29... SystemMailbox{e0d... iris             Unlimited

Migration.8f3e7716-201... Migration.8f3e771... iris             300 MB (314,572,800 bytes)

FederatedEmail.4c1f4d8... FederatedEmail.4c... iris             1 MB (1,048,576 bytes)

And here are the values for the System Attendant on the Exchange 2007 server:

distinguishedName:

CN=Microsoft System Attendant,CN=KRONOS,CN=Servers,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=<org>,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=staff,DC=win,DC=be

homeMDB:

CN=Technical Database,CN=Technical SG,CN=InformationStore,CN=KRONOS,CN=Servers,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=<org>,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=staff,DC=win,DC=be

There are 4 Databases on the Exchange 2007 server, if its of any help.

I have reinstalled the Exchange 2013 server from scratch, but it still exhibits exactly the same behavior.
