Hi, I am planning to migrate users from my Ex2003 server over onto a new 2010 server. Emails to and from users on each system work flawlessly, but when I go onto the 2003 server and try to move the mailbox, the server shows up but no Mailbox store. I have an Ex2007 server and I can move mailboxes from the Ex2003 onto that, and from there onto the Ex2010 server, so I have a workaround, but I'd like to be able to migrate from Ex2003 to Ex2010 directly. Any ideas what might be going on? Thanks for your help, Adam

Hi Simon, The first time I tried, I ran the Move Local procedure from the Exchange 2010 EMC, and it told me that it had completed successfully, however the user still logged on to the Ex2003 server, but they were accessing the public folders off the Ex2010 server. It was after that I took a look at things from the Ex2003 side, and saw that Mailbox DBs were listed for all my other servers (including Ex2003 and 2007 servers) but not the Ex2010 Adam.

The behaviour you are seeing is correct - you cannot manage users to/from Exchange 2010 from the older version. Therefore what you have identified as a likely cause is not - it is by design. I am just wondering if you don't understand how the move request works on Exchange 2010. It is different to Move Mailbox on Exchange 2003. When you run the wizard, it will complete immediately - unlike Move Mailbox which will not complete until the content has moved. At that point, nothing has changed. All you have done is complete a request for the move. The actual move will begin shortly afterwards. You can track what is happening in the EMC under Move Request. The move will either succeed or fail. If it has failed you can view a failure report which will tell you why. Therefore I suspect that either a. The move is still going. b. The move has failed, and you haven't noticed. I have never seen the move report success and the content to be left on the old server in way that the user can still access it. Ah, that explains it. Yes, I thought the move would happen instantaneously, when really it was just saying "I have successfully created a job to move the user". Of course it wasn't helped by the mailbox I was moving have over 2Gb of mails!' Thank you very much for your help. Adam
