Cant set message size limits to larger size
Hi allWe are running Exchange 2007 (upgraded from 2003) and I am trying to set message size limits for both incoming and outgoing messages to 11MB. I have changed the organisation limit and made sure that the global limit is also the same. Our previous limit used to be 5MB. ASll the commands I run in the Exchange management shell tells me that the limit is 11MB, however, I still can't send messages larger than 5MB and smaller than 11MB out of the organisation. I can send the larger messages internally but when attempting to send the message out to the internet I get an undeliverable saying that the message was above the sender's limit. I have also made sure that all connector limits are also set 11MB.I've wasted a whole day on this. Can anyone help?Regards

Hello Ausdan: could you help me gather more info in order to better troubshooting the issue? (1) what does your produciton environment look like? Mix enviornment with ex2k3 and ex2k7; or single ex2k7; (2) how do you configure your send connector? pls run" get-sendconnector |fl" , then post it here; (3)"I can send the larger messages internally" pls speak more clearly? it's only avaliable when you send mail to yourself internal, or them are Okay with any send and receive internal? (4) pls run" message tracking tool" to tracert the mail which you send outbound in your ex2k7 server; then post the result here; orrun" get-messagetrackinglog -sender account@yourdomainame -recipients " recipients@recipientdomain.com" -start " starting trackingtime" -end " end up time" | fl in ESM of ex2k7, then post it here; now, here are some document how to set message size limit; ex2k7 document:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124345.aspxhow to manage send connector for ex2k7http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998662.aspxex2k3 document:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996221.aspxhow to configure message size limit:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322679/en-ushoep it helps if anything unclear, pls let me know;-jack

Thanks for the responses. Amit, I have already changed these limits. I have also gone through your article and, whilst I found it very imformative, it has not revealed why I am having this problem. Jack, the answers to your questions follow; 1) We have a single Exchange 2007 server that has a send connector that points to a mail relay server in the dmz. The mail relay has email monitoring and filtering software in which you can set rules for the receipt and delivery of emails. I removed a rule that previously set the maximum email size to 5MB. There is now no restriction on email size on our mail relay. We originally upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 by running an "in place" upgrade. That is, we had both Exchange 2003 and 2007 servers running side by side whilst we migrated user mailboxes and public folders to the new 2007 server. Once this was completed we decommissioned the Exchange 2003 server. 2) I have masked some aspects of the sendconnector output for security reasons AddressSpaces : {smtp:*;1}AuthenticationCredential :Comment :ConnectedDomains : {}ConnectionInactivityTimeOut : 00:10:00DNSRoutingEnabled : FalseDomainSecureEnabled : FalseEnabled : TrueForceHELO : FalseFqdn :HomeMTA : Microsoft MTAHomeMtaServerId : xxxxxxIdentity : xxxxxxIgnoreSTARTTLS : FalseIsScopedConnector : FalseIsSmtpConnector : TrueLinkedReceiveConnector :MaxMessageSize : unlimitedName : xxxxxxPort : 25ProtocolLoggingLevel : NoneRequireTLS : FalseSmartHostAuthMechanism : NoneSmartHosts : {[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]}SmartHostsString : [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]SourceIPAddress : 0.0.0.0SourceRoutingGroup : Exchange Routing Group (DWBGZMFD01QNBJR)SourceTransportServers : {xxxxxx}UseExternalDNSServersEnabled : False 3) My apologies. What I was trying to say was that I can send and receive the larger email size internally - within our exchange organisation. The trouble I am having is sending and receiving the larger email size externally - or, to and from the internet. 4) Once again I have masked some aspects of the message tracking log output for security reasons Timestamp : 18/12/2008 1:58:04 PMClientIp : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxClientHostname : xxxxxx.xxx.xxx.xxxServerIp : xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxServerHostname : xxxxxxSourceContext :ConnectorId :Source : STOREDRIVEREventId : RECEIVEInternalMessageId : 227537MessageId : <BA16AB5A5DE20C4EBCFF980E4018A7FB04F247C2C9@xxxxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xx>Recipients : {xxxxx.xxxxx@xxxxx.com}RecipientStatus : {}TotalBytes : 9345250RecipientCount : 1RelatedRecipientAddress :Reference :MessageSubject : FW: testSender : xxxxx.xxxxx@xxx.xxx.xxReturnPath : xxxxx.xxxxx@xxx.xxx.xxMessageInfo : 04I: Timestamp : 18/12/2008 1:58:09 PMClientIp :ClientHostname : xxxxxxServerIp :ServerHostname :SourceContext :ConnectorId :Source : ROUTINGEventId : FAILInternalMessageId : 227538MessageId : <BA16AB5A5DE20C4EBCFF980E4018A7FB04F247C2C9@xxxxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.xx>Recipients : {xxxxx.xxxxx@xxxxx.com}RecipientStatus : {550 5.2.3 RESOLVER.RST.SendSizeLimit; message too large for this sender}TotalBytes : 9345371RecipientCount : 1RelatedRecipientAddress :Reference : {<bfd01376-bc08-413a-b54a-d8a6fd43f10a>}MessageSubject : FW: testSender : xxxxx.xxxxx@xxx.xxx.xxReturnPath : xxxxx.xxxxx@xxx.xxx.xxMessageInfo :Thanks in advance for any help.Cheers

Hi JackI'm not sure whether I should have responded directly to your message. I'm doing this just in case you have alerts set and this is the only way to activate it.My detailed response to your questions are in my previous post.Regards

Hi Ausdan, Apologies for the late response. Can you just verify below things? Check MaxSendSize on Global Transport settings. Get-TransportConfig | FT MaxSendSize, MaxReceiveSize Check MaxMessageSize of the send connector. Get-SendConnector | FT Name, MaxMessageSize Check MaxSendSize & MaxReceiveSize on the users mailbox Get-mailbox UserName | FT Name, MaxSendSize, MaxReceiveSize If all these look good then I would like to ask, did you ever rebooted the server or restarted the Transport service after changing the size for these settings. Please restart the Transport Service or Server whenever you get next scheduled downtime. Amit Tank || MVP - Exchange || MCITP - Exchange 2007 || http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Unbelievable! I restarted the Transport service and all is well. It always turns out to be something simple.Strangely enough in all the research I'd done on this problem I don't ever recall seeing any advice to reboot the server or restart the Transport service.I guess I should have thought of it.Thanks for all your help everyone.Regards

It's windows, having to reboot is implied.
