Changing IP address of Exchange server
Exchange 2007 I'm looking at setting up a simple Ex 2007 server in my test environment. The intent is to swap this server in for an existing Ex 2003 server. I'd like to build Ex 2007 on IP address IP2, while the Ex 2003 server has IP1. Once I'm done my Ex 2007 install on IP2, what impacts might there be to Exchange itself once I switch it over to IP1? I was just planning to do a simple change of the IP address in the network settings and rebooting. Will that simple process potentially work? Or might Exchange being to have problems with an IP switch, based on AD having the original IP, etc.? Maybe I would have to shutdown Ex 2003, and bring up Ex 2007 with the same IP? I'm just looking for a simple backout plan if anything goes wrong... I do not want to attempt an in place upgrade of Ex 2003 to 2007, unless that would be the best approach by far.

Exchange doesn't care about the IP address. Therefore changing the IP address and rebooting the server will not be an issue. Changing the name on the other hand would be a major problem, as that will break Exchange. As a precaution though, you may want to disable the Exchange services, then reboot the server. The Services will not start. Verify that the server is seeing the domain correctly, registered in DNS etc, then change the services back to automatic and reboot again. As Sembee says, no issues for the most part. One gotcha: If you have any receive connectors on the 2007 server listening bound to a specific IP, be sure to change that as well. ( Oh and any SMTP virtual servers bound to a specific ip as well)

Agree, chaning IP will be fine but nothing else such as domain or computername. IIS and websites can also be tied to an IP. lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com
