Hello,
If you change the login id then it disturbs the user's activity since it should be unique but you can rename the user bycorrecting first name or last name of users and it doesn't disturb/destroy mailbox.
Normally in mail communication it uses display name and in address book it uses First Name and Last Name attributes, you may correctthose.

Resolution:
You have renamed username in ADUC, right? Please follow the steps below to sync the name in ESM
1. Go to ADUC->right-click username->choose Exchange Task->Delete Mailbox
2. Go to ESM-> right-click Mailbox in Your Mailbox Store->choose Run Cleanup Agent
3. Wait for red-cross appears on oldnames mailbox->right-click mailbox->reconnect
4. Choose newname user account->OK
5. Now mailboxs name will match with newname
6. If users outlook still shows old name like Mailbox Oldname. Recreate user profile will do the task
Workaround:
Move users data to local PST, remove old users mailbox, and then create new user with correct mailbox. Restore data from PST
1. Backup data to PST
2. Go to ADUC, delete old user
3. Go to ESM, right-click Mailbox in Your Mailbox Store->choose Run Cleanup Agent
4. Right-click old users mailbox->choose Purge to delete
5. Then go to ADUC to recreate new user and mailbox
