Changing user's internal mail address
Hi I have a user: Username: Jane Smith Email: jane.smith@company.com Logon: janess Alias: janess [found in Exchange Properties > General ] She is now married and wants to change her email to jane.peters@company.com We are using Outlook 2007 SP2 and Exchange 2007 SP1. Now, I understand for external contacts, she will need to notify them of the new email address otherwise they will receive a bounce back from our mail gateway. However - what about internal users? Most people would have her address in their auto-complete in Outlook. Questions: i) Does Outlook actually use the email address to send mail or another AD attribute (e.g. Alias)?ii) If we change her email address, but leave the Alias as it is, would users receive bounce backs or not?iii) Should we be changing the Alias too when we change the email address/ usernameiv) Is it recommended to change the Alias or leave it the same for the duration of an account's existence, even if the username changes?

1. For external emails , its always SMTP address.2. No, if you change the email address, mails will not bounce back.3. Not required.4. Well, that depends on your requirement. IF you want other's to see a different name when they press CTRL+K while sending an email, you can change the alias.Raj

Hi RajnishThanks for answering.1. Thanks2. Do you know why this is? How does Exchange send email to cached recipients?3. OK - but, out of interest, what would happen if we changed the Alias as well? 4. Sorry, I don't understand - what actually happens if we change the Alias, what effect does this have? Thanks again.

Hi,2. The recipients are cached in the OL and not exchange. So emails will be recieved by Exchange and will be delivered successfully.3. Alias is the name which is for internal users (for there convinient), when they just type in initial name and press ctrl+k.4. Same as point three (they will get a different name once they press ctrl+k on outlook.)Raj
