Configuring DNS & MX records for exchange 2010
i am trying to configure Exchange Server 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2 to receive emails from the internet following the danscourses tutorials: i don't have any windows administration skills, and i am stuck with the DNS configuration. and following is the domain configuration i got from the hosting: Host >>>>>>>>>>> Points to 1- @ >>> 68.178.232.100 2- e >>> email.secureserver.net 3- email >>> email.secureserver.net 4- ftp >>> @ 5- imap >>> imap.secureserver.net 6- mail >>> pop.secureserver.net 7- mobilemail >>> mobilemail-v01.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net 8- pda >>> mobilemail-v01.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net 9- smtp >>> smtp.secureserver.net10- webmail >>> webmail.secureserver.net 11- www >>> @ 12- MX (Mail Exchanger): Priority Host Points to 10 @ mailstore1.secureserver.net 0 @ smtp.secureserver.net following are the steps i made: 1- Add new name server: add > ns1.centors.com ip > Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 2- Change the A record change it to point to the public ip address > Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 3- New cname record for www and make it resolve to centors.com 4- New mx record for mail.centors.com 5- New A record for mail.centors.com: name: mail ip: Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 6- new A record for ns1: ip: Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 7- i made port forward in the router for SMTP and POP3 to the exchange server local ip address. ISSUE: i have a user account in the active directory, and the user is member of the domain, the user ismyuser@centors.com and when trying to login with this account in outlook 2010 on other machine using following data: - account type: POP3 - incoming mail server: mail.centors.com - outgoing mail server: mail.centors.com i always get the error: Authorization failed, check your server settings. please advise what's wrong with the configuration, thanks in advance.

However, if they try connecting to mail.centors.com they're connectin to your ISP's POP3 server not your Exchange server. SMTP to 41.233.26.131 is also working -- but the information returned from DNS when asked to resolve mail.centors.com is a CNAME record with a cononical name of pop.secureserver.net and an IP address of 97.74.135.111. In your description you said: .. 5- New A record for mail.centors.com: .. name: mail .. ip: Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 That clearly isn't what you did. If you want your POP3 users to connect to YOUR server you need to use an "A" record that points them there, not to to your ISP. If you want your inbound e-mail to go to your ISP instead of your Exchange server then your MX and A records are correct. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hi Rich, i want my exchange users to be able to open their emails on outlook 2010, and when i ping mail.centors.com it works fine so i followed the tutorial in here giving that my mail server is mail.centors.com and the user account is user@centors.com following the tutorial here: http://support.itsolutionsnow.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=153 i am getting the error: The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete i restarted the service **microsoft exchange attendant services** but still keeps getting same error. please advise how to fix this issue (if there are any changes to make in the domain configuration or my the DNS configuration on windows server) with little details since i am a developer not a system admin.

But what IP address was pinged? I just tried it and 64.202.165.92 was the IP address. That's not the address you noted in your original post: ... 5- New A record for mail.centors.com: ... name: mail ... ip: Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 Further, a connection to IP address 41.233.26.131:110, which worked the other day, now fails to connect. A connection to 64.202.165.92:110 results in this POP3 header: +OK <15500.1348691611@m1plpop05.prod.mesa1.secureserver.net> So, POP3 is working, but it's not connecting to your Exchange organization which, I assume, is where your mailboxes are? >so i followed the tutorial in here giving that my mail server is mail.centors.com and the user account is user@centors.com Is mail.centors.com YOUR EXCHANGE server, or is it the ISP's? >following the tutorial here: http://support.itsolutionsnow.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=153 i am getting the error: The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Forget tutorials. Describe how YOU want to send and receive Internet SMTP e-mail. Then describe how you want your users to connect to their mailbox. Should sending/receiving/mailbox access be done using YOUR server or the ISPs server? --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
