Creating New Database
I’m running Exchange 2003 R2 Enterprise with two storage groups. My first database store has gotten too big and I have moved all the mailboxes to a new store
on another partition. The only mailboxes left are SMTP, System Attendant, and SystemMailbox. I have read articles about dismounting the store and renaming the EDB & STM files followed by mounting again. This will supposedly create a blank
database and a new System Attendant mailbox. Is this a good idea and will it actually work? I’m trying to avoid down time and I’m having disk space problems as well. If this is feasible is there a way to have Exchange put
the new System Attendant mailbox back into the new database and not into one of my other stores? I'm really concerned about the System Attendant mailbox. Thanks!

So long as you are sure the user mailboxes are migrated you need not bother with the renaming. dismount, delete, mount & accept the messages.
You need not be concerned about those pseudo mailboxes.

well..
If the store is then deleted, the System Attendant mailbox will be moved automatically into another mailbox store on the server, that is, the
HomeMDB value on the directory object will be updated. The system attendant service must be restarted to reconfigure MSExchangeFBPublish to use the new mailbox location, and the mailbox object may not reappear under the Mailboxes node of Exchange
System Manager until it is used in the future.
If there is a System Attendant directory object but no mailbox object, the mailbox store object will be re-created automatically in the mailbox store referenced by the
HomeMDB attribute as soon as it is needed. Note that one cause of this is using a blank store for troubleshooting.

you can go ahead with your plan... and restart the systemattendent service after you mount the new databaseDhruv

Mark,
My public folder database still resides on that drive and I would like to get rid of the 80 GB database file that Backup Exec is still going to backup when
I schedule a full backup. I would really like to use the disk space instead of having it tide up with a empty database.
I think it would speed up my Exchange backups.

He meant that if you're sure there are no active mailboxes in the database, and no disconnected mailboxes you might want to reconnect at some later date, that all you have to do is dismount the database, delete the two database files, and then remount the database.
You'll get a database that's a few megabytes in size as a result.--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Just dismount it for now until you're 100% sure that everything has been migrated over to the second SG.
