Creating an Exchange 2007 mailbox for a non-employee without purchasing of additional CAL
Hello, Looking for best practice for creating an Exchange 2007 mailbox for a non-employee i.e "Temp Employee" or "Consultant" without use/purchase of additional licenses(CALs). We have a temp employee sitting in for an employee currently on leave and needs to be able to send out emails but not with the "Send as on behalf of..." option! Thanks, Milton

Someting to look into for the legalities: check to see if you have any mailboxes that once belonged to somone that no longer is with the company, yet still reside on the network/active. If you need to keep this mailbox active for archived emails -- export the emails to a PST and save it on a network drive and sync it up to the user needing the access. Once verified that all has been transfered, get rid of the mailbox and the user account, replace with the temp. Unless it's changed, the last I knew -- MS licensesing requires all mailboxes to be assigned a license regardless of duration. Might be good practice to have a 5 license buffer if your company is known to bring in temps on a semi reg basis. At least if this practice with the mailboxes are *NOT* discouraged by MS, you now have a work around for future impositions as this. The greatest mistakes made, are making none at all. I must be nearing Perfection then!

Hi Milton, Q. How should I license occasional users that are not employees or contractors of my company? A. You can purchase one External Connector license for each server that your non-employee users will connect to, rather than CALs for each of these users. Please see the Exchange product use rights (PUR) for additional information. More information, please see: Licensing FAQ http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/en-us/licensing-faq.aspx I would also suggest you make a phone to Microsoft representative directly. Thank you guys. I called MS licensing for non-profit pricing and since the External Connector option is very expensive, I will use a disabled user's license and purchase CALs as needed. I appreciate all the
