Custom LDAP filter for Check Names in Outlook 2010

I was wondering if anyone can point me to information on how to alter the LDAP search string used in Outlook 2010 to look up names in the GAL (specifically for the Check Names feature). I've seen articles on how to do it in Outlook 2007 but I can't find official documentation on how to do it in Outlook 2010. I also searching the Excel sheet included in the Office 2010 Administrative Template files (ADM, ADMX/ADML) and Office Customization Tool but couldnt find any references to "LDAP", "Check Names", or "001e6624".  There is one example of how to do it in Outlook 2010 on the TechNet forums but the solution posted didnt work for me. Im not sure if it's because I followed the instructions incorrectly (since I used Google translate to convert the post to English) or that there is a step or two missing from the solution.

What Im trying to accomplish is to change the search string from (what I think) is the default:

  • (&(mail=*)(|(mail=%s*)(cn=%s*)(sn=%s*)(givenName=%s*)(displayName=%s*)))

To

  • (&(mail=*)(|(mail=*%s*)(cn=*%s*)(sn=*%s*)(givenName=*%s*)(displayName=*%s*)))

The reason being is that in the current state if anyone tries to search for the distribution list Dept-ES-HelpDesk they have to search for Dept-ES-H* since the current search string only searches for the beginning of all the specified fields. This means if someone searches for HelpDesk they will only get results that begin with HelpDesk, and therefore not Dept-ES-HelpDesk.

Outlook 2010 can call the LDAP from AD to filter, have you tried Account settings > Address Book Tab > New > Internet Direcotry Service (LDAP) to wrouk around?

We are looking to change the default behvaior (like you can in Outlook 2007) instead of adding another search option. That way it applies to all the various address books listed and any new ones created.

Hi,

This seems to be a bit complicated. I would request you to open phone support case with Microsoft at this point of time as it would require major troubleshooting and logs which is not possible via this Forum.

You can always open Phone support case by calling customer central on 1-800-936-4900 or alternatively you can visit http://support.microsoft.com/oas

Hope this helps

Thanks
