Hi,

I have two Exchange 2013 servers, CAS and Mailbox role on both and DAG between.

And one unusual setup (maybe :-)) One node is on Hyper-v, another is on VM-ware. VM-ware is backuped with Veeam, and Hyper-V with Microsoft DPM.

Can I (should I?)  backup different DAG nodes (in different time, ofc.) with different tools. Is that possible or advisable ?

I am primary interested in Exchange database backup. 

I hope that I can do backup of Exchange database and flush logs with both backup tools.(because one sometimes dont work)

Veeam and DPM can backup exchange and both flush the logs. DPM is an awesome backup tool i have found and use it at alot of customers.

I personally like the idea of installing the agents on the nodes themselves and treating them like physical machines.  Mostly because I only care about backing up the databases.  If the server crashes I'm going to rebuild the OS and reinstall exchange with the recoverserver switch.  

I'm not too familiar with DPM, but I know 3rd party vendors like CommVault and Backup Exec allow you to install their agents on each mailbox server and can be configured to backup only passive copies of the database so the load of a backup is not competing with the user's access to their mailboxes.

No, dpm requires an agent and will stamp the logs, if you bring another tool in to flush the logs it will render your backups inconsistent. you need to select 1 or the other.

Also remember you cannot snapshot exchange servers as they process data realtime.

Hi,

Exchange 2013 supports only Exchange-aware, VSS-based backups. To back up and restore Exchange 2013, you must use an Exchange-aware application that supports the VSS writer for Exchange 2013, such as Windows Server Backup (with the VSS plug-in), Microsoft System Center 2012 - Data Protection Manager, or a third-party Exchange-aware VSS-based application.

Why dont you use DPM too to backup both Exchange in Hyper-v and VM-ware? Here are some articles for your reference:
