DNS issues
Hi there,
I have been beating my head against a wall over this one for some time. I have an Exchange 2003 server running on Windows 2003 which works fine apart from Activesync. I think that I have narrowed the issue down to DNS. I get the below error when I run Dcdiag.
Doing initial required tests
Testing server: Default-First-Site\VM2K32
Starting test: Connectivity
The host 05c99499-e97c-418b-b1b5-8444889eb923._msdcs.CITC.local could n
ot be resolved to an
IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc
Although the Guid DNS name
(05c99499-e97c-418b-b1b5-8444889eb923._msdcs.CITC.local) couldn't be
resolved, the server name (vm2k32.CITC.local) resolved to the IP
address (217.20.253.122) and was pingable. Check that the IP address
is registered correctly with the DNS server.
......................... VM2K32 failed test Connectivity
All other tests pass fine.
Does anyone have any idea what the fix is for this issue?
Any help would be very gratefully accepted.

To fix that issue you can try either doing dcdiag /fix (or netdiag /fix) or you can restart the netlogon service on the server vm2k32.CITC.local (this causes the server to re-register its DNS records on theDNS server that is set for its Primary DNS server)My blog: http://cjwdev.wordpress.com

I think you'd get a better answer in one of the forums for theoperating system or AD.It looks like the server may have been incompletely dcpromo'ed toremove it as a DC at some point. DNS is just reporting the failure toresolve the GUID of the server, but why that GUID is being used is theproblem that need resolution. No the GUID is supposed to be used, that is how AD communicates with each of the DCs - it only falls back to the normal dns host name if the GUID name cannot be found. The fact that it is having to resort to using the normal DNS name is a problem that needs resolving (which you can do by trying one of the things I mentioned in my post) :)ChrisMy blog: http://cjwdev.wordpress.com

Hi guys, Thanks Chris for that solution. I don't get the error anymore after running the dcdiag /fix. I just get a fail for syslog, which doesn't sound that improtant. The ActiveSync still doesn't work though. Does the system need restarting for the changes to take effect? Thanks Mark

but that is not a problem with the GUID, just the fact that the GUID is not registered in DNS correctly.You said "DNS is just reporting the failure to resolve the GUID of the server, but why that GUID is being used is the problem that need resolution" but I would say the fact that this GUID is being used is not a problem - the fact that the GUID does not exist in DNS is the problem. Note that the error that I see in the event log is still: Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [vm2k32.CITC.local] User: [test.user@domain.com] HTTP status code: [503]. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly. Thanks again. Mark

Hi Mark,No you do not need to reboot for the DNS change to take effect - however, now that you have mentioned the error you are getting I do not think that the GUID DNS name will have had anything to do with this (but its good that you have fixed that now anyway).HTTP error 503 means Service Unavailable, I would check your IIS config on the exchange server (something as simple as restarting IIS might even sort it out)Chris

Hi Chris, I'm glad that the DNS is fixed to. Was hoping it would fix my other issue, but you're probably right, it's unrelated. Before doing this, I went through every forum and knowledge base artice I could to configure ActiveSync and it is set up how it should be. It just doesn't work. I'll have to maybe try something else. Hi Chris, For OMA I recieve the below error: Unable to connect to your mailbox on server VM2K32. Please try again later. If the problem persists contact your administrator. For ActiveSync I just get page cannot be found. Mark

Ah sorry my bad its "/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync" not just "/ActiveSync" - when you go to that you should get an error saying 501/503 Not Implemented (thats normal) but let me know what you see.I think you can still have ActiveSync working without enabling OMA so lets forget about that OMA bit for now (its been a while since I played with any of this mobile stuff but I remember it being a pain!).Also, you mentioned the error on the exchange server but what error do you get on the mobile device?Oh and can you also just confirm that all of the boxes in the ActiveSync settings window are ticked? You can check by going into Exchange System Manager, expanding Global Settings, right clicking on Mobile Services and going to properties - then on that first window there will be a groupbox titled ActiveSync with some settings in it.ChrisMy blog: http://cjwdev.wordpress.com

No probs. I tried the /Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync and got a page cannot be displayed error. Everything in the ActiveSync groupbox is ticked under Global and the ActiveSync Virtiual Directory and the exchange-oma Directory (that I manually created following reading a knowledge base articvel) seem to have all required permissions. I'm guessing if I'm getting a page cannot be displayed rather than the 501/503 error, then the problem is quite fundemental? I'm quite new to this mobile stuff also. Not enjoying it much so far ;-) Mark

Hi Chris, The event log just has one entry when I try to sync: Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [vm2k32.CITC.local] User: [test.user@domain.com] HTTP status code: [503]. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly. The event ID is 3005 On the device, It just says Exchange Server error when I initiate a sync. This is a tricky one! Mark

Does the ActiveSync never work since deployed?
Is there any anti-virus software on the exchange servers?
Besides the error event 3005, is there any further warning events around it?
