Database headers have been successfully validated. All databases are in a dirty shutdown state
Exchange 2007 SP1 with SCR to remote site using VPN. Using Symantec BU Exec 11d. Get this message during backup: Event Type:InformationEvent Source:Storage Group Consistency CheckEvent Category:Database Header Validation Event ID:200Date:4/19/2008Time:8:24:18 AMUser:N/AComputer:MS2Description:Instance 2: Database headers have been successfully validated. All databases are in a dirty shutdown state. To bring these databases to a clean shutdown state, log generations 15937 (0x00003e41) to 15955 (0x00003e53) will be required. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. No other errors in event logs and EBPA shows all healthy and well. Server always shutdown clean. Any Ideas?

Geno,Databases are in dirty shutdown when their not cleanly shutdown or are in use. Do you use a special agent from Backup Exec to backup your mailstore ?Have you tried to make a backup with NTbackup to exclude that it is caused by Backup Exec ?Johan

Johan, We use the Exchange agent for Symantec BU Exec 11d. Have called Symantec support (sincethe info event happens during their backupwindow)but have not tried an NTbackup. That is a great idea to rule out Symantec. My thought is that SP1/SCR may be the cuplrit and not a documented issue with MS yet. Server runs great other than the one troublesome, informational event. Thanks for your reply. Geno

Did an NTbackup as Johan had suggested and no errors about databases in dirty shutdown state. Hopefully the message that Symantec produces is a false positive. Geno

Geno, Yes it could be Symantec, have you heard anything from them yet ? Johan

Johan, Symantec hasnot respondedto the error but they did tell me: "NTBackup and Backup Exec only backup exchange the same way in Exchange 2003 (we both do a streaming backup). However, in 2007, Backup Exec does snapshot backups only. While NTBackup does a streaming backup still. This would be why the two are not accurate representations of each other in this scenario." I digged through my event logs some more on the Exchange server and found that every time that it re-boots I get the following events: Event Type:InformationEvent Source:ESEEvent Category:Logging/Recovery Event ID:300Date:4/16/2008Time:5:31:33 PMUser:N/AComputer:MS2Description:edgetransport (4944) Transport Mail Database: The database engine is initiating recovery steps. Don't get any events on the mailbox databases but I wonder if the "recovery" that is playing on the "Transport Mail Database" is making the system think that all databases are dirty. I will dismount the stores tommorow night and perform a eseutil /mh to see if the databases are really marked as "dirty". Thanks for your help with this. Geno

Had a engineering consultant come in to decomission the old Exchange 2003 server tonight and he ran Eseutil against all of the 2007 databases and they were in a "Clean Shutdown" state. Geno
