Decommissioning exchange server 2003
Hi There: Let me give you some backgroud about this activity: AD environment: 4 domains (1 root and 3 child domains). Basically exchange server are distributed in this way (Exchange server 2007 on Child domainA) and we have some exchange 2003 boxes spread on (Child domain B ) so currently we would like to decommissioning the last exchange 2003 box placed on Child Domain B. This exchange server box counts on all roles placed on it (RUP, public folders, bridgehead). I know that previously we should move all the exchange server roles before to start with uninstallation, but my question is in regards to public folders. If I´m going to move the public folder replicas , would be better if I placed them on another exchange server 2003 or should I pass it to one of exchange server 2007? and also is there any tool to monitor or confirm that my exchange 2003 is not replicating against any other exchange server? Best regards!! JASM

Where is the data going to end up eventually? If you already have all of the data on one of the Exchange 2003 servers, then you could do a consolidation process, so that only one Exchange 2003 server is replicating to the Exchange 2007 server. Make sure that they have an RGC directly between them to reduce the traffic. Otherwise it doesn't really matter, because public folders on matter to the mailboxes on that server (unless you have changed the public folder configuration on the database to use another server's public folders). There is very little for monitoring public folder replication. The only reliable check is item count in ESM. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

"There is very little for monitoring public folder replication. The only reliable check is item count in ESM." I agree generally. However, PF replication is going to be the problematic one. Make sure F/B is replicationg properly, and you OAB is working before you decommission 2003. J
